Culture and History

In Esgrus, the municipality highlights the Romanesque fieldstone church of St. Mary, dating from the 12th century, as well as the Brunsholmhof and Frauenhof estate complexes as particularly impressive sights. The choir of St. Mary's Church in Esgrus was extended around 1500, and the chancel vaults feature late Gothic vine ornamentation. The apse contains a carved winged altarpiece with a Crucifixion scene. The furnishings also include a bronze baptismal font from 1619 with eight reliefs of the Apostles and a Baroque pulpit from 1681 with painted scenes from the life of Christ. Since 1725, the galleries in the nave have enclosed the north and west sides; the church tower of St. Mary in Esgrus is 38 metres high.

The Frauenhof complex consists of a listed manor house, a gatehouse, an access avenue and a row of lime trees. The churchyard of St. Mary is also listed as a garden monument in connection with the church.

Nature and Trails

Esgrus is home to a natural monument consisting of a group of thirteen oak trees. The oldest tree at Osterpforte is said to be more than 650 years old. The Kleiner Hof am Meer offering in Esgrus includes an overnight site for trekking travellers. This trekking site is located in an orchard meadow near a small natural pond and has an outdoor bathroom with a shower, toilet and washbasin. Visitors may sample herbs from the herb garden. The trekking offering is intended for travellers arriving by bicycle or on foot.

Local Life and Activities

The Ortskulturring Esgrus organises talks, walks and cycling tours and also offers painting workshops. Exercise activities are organised as ongoing courses. St. Mary is a venue for concerts and is associated with the activities “Sitting in Silence” and “Light of Peace”. From Kirchberg, a path leads north towards Schadelund or Atzbüll.
