Schönwohld combines a distinctive landscape around lakes and valley areas with tangible local history. The district belongs to the municipality of Achterwehr, which lies west of Kiel. Large parts of the municipal area are located in landscape or nature conservation areas and belong to Westensee Nature Park. Schönwohld is therefore particularly interesting when choosing a holiday apartment for travellers who want to combine nature observation, regional history and a rural setting in their travel plans.

Lakes, siltation zones and the Eider landscape

One defining landscape feature is Lake Hansdorf east of district road 32 near Schönwohld. The lake is shallow, heavily silted up and eutrophic. Its siltation vegetation includes reeds, willow scrub and alder carr. The almost continuous siltation belt is particularly pronounced. Those interested in the development of lakes and wetland habitats will find a specific natural area here with several characteristic structures.

Schönwohld borders more or less directly on the FFH area “Upper Eider area including lakes”. This includes the valley area of the Hansdorfer Aue from its confluence with the Eider to district road 32 near Schönwohld. The associated valley areas, characterised by extensively managed grassland, are approximately 100 to 500 metres wide; in some places, grassland areas on the moraine slopes are also included. These different landscape forms give the surroundings a clear connection to nature, without all areas having the same character.

Smaller landscape features are also part of Schönwohld’s character. A yew tree approximately 120 years old stands in the triangular area between K 93, “Am Griesenbötel” and “Ins Fegefeuer”. The tree, protected under Section 15b of the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Act (LNatSchG), has a trunk diameter of approximately 80 centimetres and a crown diameter of approximately 8.00 metres. As part of the “BlütenReich Achterwehr” project, the “Am Hundeplatz” meadow was also established. It covers approximately 240 square metres and is mown twice a year in accordance with the maintenance plan.

Local history to read about and discover

Schönwohld can be experienced through more than just its landscape. The Schönwohld school chronicle covers the years 1882 to 1960 and was begun in 1882 by teacher Sievert Holling. The 180-page chronicle is available for 10 euros; if you are interested, you can contact schulchronik@achterwehr.de. It therefore offers a specific opportunity to explore the development of the village over a long period using a coherent document.

Further historical points of reference include the Griesenbötel inn, which is designated as a cultural monument, and a residential cottage listed as a simple cultural monument in a provisional register of cultural monuments. The residential cottage was recorded in 1982. For travel planning, this creates a useful contrast to exploring nature: you can focus your stay more strongly on lakes, valley areas and protected landscapes, or additionally take into account the architectural and written traces of local history.

Travelling between Achterwehr and Schönwohld

Outside built-up areas, a combined footpath and cycle path runs along Rendsburger Landstraße between Achterwehr and Schönwohld and is very well developed. This specific connection is useful for planning if you view walks and bike tours as part of your stay. In addition, the municipality has a public bathing area at Lake Ahrensee. Depending on your personal priorities, you can therefore assign different weight to nature, exercise, water and culture when looking for accommodation, without limiting Schönwohld to just one type of holiday.

For families who want to combine different interests, the appeal lies in this mixture of manageable local histories, distinctive landscape details and larger protected areas. A holiday apartment in Schönwohld can serve as a starting point for an individually arranged trip. What matters less is a uniform programme than whether you want to place Lake Hansdorf, the Eider landscape, historical evidence or the area around Lake Ahrensee at the centre of your visit.
