Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen between Lakes, Trails and History
Accommodation in Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen
Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen combines the lake landscape of Holstein Switzerland with cycling and hiking routes, long-established cultural sites and boat trips. The town lies on a ridge between Lake Kellersee and Lake Dieksee. Those looking for a holiday apartment for varied days away can combine nature experiences, physical activity and regional history here, depending on their own plans.
Lakes, the Schwentine and trails for active days
The River Schwentine connects Lake Kellersee and Lake Dieksee, runs through Malente town centre and past the spa gardens. The network of lakes can be experienced by paddling, hiking and cycling. A special option is the 12-kilometre 5-Lakes Cruise operated by the Weiße Flotte excursion boats. It crosses Lake Dieksee, Lake Langensee, Lake Behlersee, Lake Höftsee and Lake Edebergsee, turning the succession of lakes into an excursion experience in its own right.
There are also clearly described options for exploring the area on foot and by bicycle. The Lake Dieksee Circular Trail is 11.1 kilometres long and passes through Malente-Gremsmühlen. The 23-kilometre “In the Footsteps of the Boulders” cycling tour runs through the hilly landscape of East Holstein around Malente. It includes eight large boulders, each marked with signs providing information about the history of the location, the landscape views or directions. In addition, eight of the 21 Nordic walking routes run in and around the climatic spa town of Bad Malente.
Culture between the Cottage, Church and Mill
Tews-Kate is a distinctive place for gaining an insight into the region’s past. It is considered the oldest preserved smokehouse cottage in East Holstein and is a thatched former smokehouse cottage dating from the Thirty Years’ War. Today, it houses Malente’s local history museum. The permanent exhibition focuses on agricultural equipment, household furnishings and tools of various trades.
The Maria Magdalenen Church has historical roots dating back to the 13th century. Its nave and chancel have been preserved in their original form. The interior features carvings on the Renaissance pulpit, the altar and the wall panelling. Gremsmühle complements the townscape as a water-powered grain mill.
Planning varied days away
For families and other travel groups, a stay in Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen can be organised in different ways: one day can be devoted to the lake landscape and a boat trip, and another to a cycling tour or circular trail. Those who prefer a quieter pace will find various biotopes and areas in the 13-hectare WunderWeltWasser site, connected by wooden footbridges. This also makes the site accessible to older people.
Throughout the year, the spa gardens’ spa centre, open-air stage and music pavilion provide space for concerts, readings and other events. In addition to trails and lakes, there are therefore also cultural events to choose from. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus primarily on water, physical activity, local history or a mixture of these experiences. Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen offers several specific starting points for this, without every day of your holiday having to look the same.
