Grube’s access to the Baltic Sea is Rosenfelder Strand, a 2.5-kilometre-long natural beach with no tourist tax. There are sections for dog owners and naturist guests; the beach is described as an untouched dune landscape.
Nature
The birdwatching station is located near Rosenfelder Strand. It covers 3 hectares of water and 11 hectares of extensively managed grassland. Three observation openings make it possible to watch various bird species from close up. The station is best reached on foot or by bicycle.
White storks nest on the former dairy chimney at Haus Avalon near the church. After returning from their wintering grounds, their nesting activity can be observed live.
Culture
The Grube Village Museum is located in a typical house dating from 1890 and presents a folklore and prehistoric collection on rural life before the introduction of modern technology. It also documents the harvesting and processing of reeds, as well as the drainage of Lake Grube in 1938.
St. Jürgen Church in Grube was first mentioned in official records in 1232 and is one of the oldest Early Gothic brick churches. It houses an important winged altarpiece from the 15th century, regarded as an important example of Late Gothic panel painting.
Nearby is the listed village of Siggeneben, which is associated with Grube and features whitewashed thatched-roof houses.
Geographical Setting
From Grube, more than 300 kilometres of developed and signposted cycling and hiking trails can be used to explore the wider OstseeFerienLand region. In the broader regional surroundings, the Oldenburg Graben lowland offers cycling and hiking routes through a 23-kilometre-long coastal depression with cultural and scenic features.
From the Paasch-Eyler-Platz viewpoint, the view extends across the former lakebed of Lake Grube; information boards explain the history of the site.
Activities
The Grube scout camp covers a lake, several hills, a 400-metre-long canoeing course and an amphitheatre. On Dunker’scher Platz in Grube, there are two competition-standard boules courts and a view across the former Grube Lake lowland. Grube LSC Condor airfield offers introductory courses and sightseeing flights.
