The history of Sterley includes St. John's Church. The Sterley parish was first documented in 1194 and is described as one of the oldest parishes in what later became the Duchy of Lauenburg.
Culture and History
St. John's Church was built from fieldstone in the early 13th century. It preserves wall and ceiling paintings from several periods, including a depiction of Mary from the late 13th century. Cycle Paths and Trails
Sterley is connected to an 18-kilometre cycle route that leads through the chain of lakes from Salem to Seedorf. It runs mainly along paved minor roads as well as developed agricultural and hiking paths; there are also some sandy forest sections and small climbs.
The long-distance cycle routes Alte Salzstraße and Via Scandinavica, both certified by the ADFC, also run through the nature park. The Via Scandinavica is part of the Way of St. James. A 48.5-kilometre circular route called the Church Tour leads through Neu-Sterley.
