Nature
The “Kudensee and Surroundings” nature reserve covers 246 hectares in Averlak and Kuden. Kudensee has a water surface of around 40 hectares and provides a habitat for a variety of marsh and water birds. Kudensee is also described as the last remaining lake in Dithmarschen formed from former sea inlets.
Hiking
The “Around Kudensee” route, which begins in Averlak, is classified as an easy hiking route and is approximately 12.06 kilometres long. Circular hiking trail no. 2 follows the Kiel Canal in places and passes through Kuden before reaching Kudensee. The route includes a viewing platform with a panoramic view over Kudensee and the surrounding landscape. Along the way, hikers pass close to large ships on the Kiel Canal.
Getting there
There is roadside parking in Averlak for the route. Bus route 2572 connects Averlak via Eddelak with St. Michaelisdonn.
