Sandau (Elbe): Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The three-nave Late Romanesque brick basilica of St. Laurentius/St. Nicolaus is a stop on the northern route of the Romanesque Road. Its rebuilt church tower combines changing exhibitions with a viewing platform on the fifth floor and views over the town and surrounding area. Culture

The rebuilt tower houses a winter church. The reconstructed church building also contains a permanent exhibition with images from the Second World War. From April to October, the church is open as an open church and cyclists’ church; all tower levels are accessible by lift. Guided tours of the church and the rebuilt tower last approximately 30 to 60 minutes and include the view from the bell tower.

History

The historic townscape includes the town hall, a half-timbered building more than 300 years old with a double mansard roof. The Kaiser and War Memorial stands there as a red marble obelisk and is illuminated by two Schinkel lamps. A Polish memorial commemorates fallen soldiers of the Polish First Army, who crossed the Elbe in the final days of 1945.

Nature

The Elbe-Havel landscape around Sandau is of interest to cyclists and tourists. The Ausspanne Café is located on the Elbe Cycle Route; this cyclists’ rest stop is known for its homemade sheet cakes.

Getting Around

The Sandau ferry operates both as a cable ferry and as a motor ferry and can run during high and low water. As a cable ferry, it is suspended from a 500-metre-long cable, while the current pushes it 200 metres across the river. During high water, the ferry switches to motor operation.

Sandau is located on the northern route of the Romanesque Road; nearby stops are Havelberg, Schönhausen, Wust and Jerichow.
