Culture
Calbe’s Roland is a stone figure standing in front of the town hall. A 4.5-metre-high sandstone Roland was unveiled in Calbe in 1976. The Heimatstube Calbe museum is located in former overnight accommodation rooms above the Brauner Hirsch inn. It contains exhibits and information panels about the history of Calbe.
Onion cultivation is also part of the town’s history: it began in Calbe in 1591 and continues to this day. The Bismarck Tower is 30 metres high and the tallest tower of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt.
Nature
Calbe is surrounded by protected biotopes, meadows and wooded areas. There are also the reed-lined Gribehner ponds and pools. The “Green Lung” has paths for jogging, cycling, running and walking.
The Wartenberg local recreation area is located around 4 kilometres west of Calbe. It has a small wildlife park with a petting zoo and a playground.
Getting Around
The cable ferry in Calbe crosses the Saale to Gottesgnaden and is one of the few cable ferries in Germany. It is powered exclusively by the current of the Saale. There is also a public slipway on the Saale that is accessible to boaters.
During the milder seasons, the Saalefee passenger boat takes guests on the water between Calbe and Bernburg.
Cycling
Calbe has five different cycling tours with options for experienced cyclists and families. The Bördehamster Cycle Route can be explored from Calbe or Barby. The Saale Cycle Route runs through Calbe, with a renewed western route on the town side and a quieter, nature-oriented eastern side.
The Elbe-Saale-Winkel region offers opportunities for cycling, hiking and canoeing, as well as water sports, camping and nature experiences.
