Nature

The “Porphyry Landscape Wettin/Gimritz” nature trail is a 2.5-kilometre circular route suitable for families. It leads through the “Porphyry Hills Landscape near Gimritz” protected area. The Wettin Geopath is an approximately three-hour, 9-kilometre circular route northwest of Wettin. Ten information boards explain the local geology and mining relics from the extraction of coal, copper shale, and potash salt.

Trails

The Wettin Trail connects Wettin-Löbejün with the Saale Valley and the Petersberg via a 60-kilometre loop, passing cultural monuments, cycle routes, and nature reserves along the way. The 60-kilometre western route is designed as a circular cycle route between the Saale Valley and the Petersberg. In the Wettin-Löbejün area, it passes through Wettin, Löbejün, and Schlettau, as well as along the Fuhne Cycle Route. It combines cultural monuments with sections through the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park and several nature reserves.

Culture

Wettin Information arranges guided city tours covering the Templar Chapel, St. Nicholas Church, Wettin Castle, local geology and mining, Pögritz Mill, and the Bismarck Tower. Guided tours of Wettin Castle can also be booked through Wettin Information. The castle was first mentioned in official records in 961.

The 21-metre-high Wettin Bismarck Tower stands on a wooded porphyry cone. From there, views extend across the Saale Valley, mining relics, and the Petersberg; in good weather, the Brocken can also be seen. The Templar Chapel of “Our Lady” in Mücheln offers services, concerts, and guided tours.

Löbejün is home to the late Gothic St. Peter’s Church, which is visible from the Fuhne Cycle Route. The Carl Loewe Museum is housed in a former school building erected on the foundations of Carl Loewe’s birthplace. The permanent exhibition documents the composer’s life and work, while listening stations allow visitors to hear Loewe’s compositions directly. The museum is approximately 250 metres from public transport.
