Elbingerode’s history is reflected not only in its collections, but also in its diverse buildings. The Protestant St. Jacobi Church was built in the neo-Gothic style by the royal Hanoverian master builder Hase. The Deaconess Motherhouse in Elbingerode adds a different architectural accent: it was built between 1932 and 1934 to designs by Godehard Schwethelm and is a Bauhaus-style building. Neo-Gothic and Bauhaus offer two distinct architectural perspectives on Elbingerode. This gives architecture enthusiasts a concrete opportunity to compare different styles.

The Elbingerode (Harz) local history room displays furniture, household utensils, documents, and exhibits on crafts and woodworking. Its scope ranges from everyday objects to traditional crafts. Another historical landmark is the castle ruin, which dates back to the 16th century. The remaining castle walls stand in a park used for recreation. The exhibits, building and park offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
The viewing pavilion on the Kahlenberg offers panoramic views across Elbingerode to the Brocken massif. A hike from the Harzer Wandernadel booklet “My First Stamp Booklet” passes the Büchenberg show mine, the marble quarry, the Dreiherrenstein and the Galgenberg before returning. You can choose between taking in the landscape views and following a route with several named stops.
Getting here and getting around
The Elbingerode Tourist Information Centre is a central contact point within the town of Oberharz am Brocken. It provides tourist advice, arranges accommodation and coordinates tourism matters for the districts of Elbingerode and Königshütte, as well as the cave village of Rübeland. Elbingerode is directly on the B27 and B244 federal highways. The “Elbingerode, Markt” bus stop is close to the Tourist Information Centre. For rail travel to Elbingerode, the destination station is Wernigerode Hauptbahnhof; from there, continue by regional bus. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Hiking and culture in Oberharz am Brocken
In the wider destination of Oberharz am Brocken, two hikes can be compared by length and duration. The moderately difficult route through mixed forest to the Krockstein viewpoint is 2.8 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 55 minutes. The also moderately difficult circular route around the Hasselvorsperre near Hasselfelde is 5.5 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 1 hour and 28 minutes. The two routes therefore differ considerably in distance and time required. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Another highlight in Oberharz am Brocken is the charcoal-burning craft. At the Harzköhlerei Stemberghaus, traditional earth kilns are built, charred and harvested from early April to late October, offering a chance to experience this age-old craft in action. In Stiege, the stave church provides its own architectural accent: it is the only sacred building in Germany in the Norwegian dragon style. These regional attractions add further cultural and natural themes to Elbingerode’s local history, without being confused with the town’s own sights.
