Benzingerode lies between the Austberg and Struven or Ziegenberg, where the Hellbach cuts through the Muschelkalk ridge. Together with the Horstberg, these ridges are part of the European Natura 2000 protected area network. The terrain gives the village a distinct landscape character: Muschelkalk, ridges and the course of the stream shape the view of the surroundings.
Circular Trail and Views from the Austberg
In the surrounding area of Benzingerode, a marked 7 km circular trail runs over the Austberg and through vegetation. The mountain consists mainly of Muschelkalk. Menhir, Castle Ruins and Church
A striking feature in Benzingerode is the large menhir. The stone is 3.50 m high and still stands in its original location. It is estimated to be 4,000 to 5,000 years old. Its height, original location and estimated age make the menhir a tangible testament to the village’s long history.
Just east of Benzingerode lie the few remains of Struvenburg, a former medieval castle complex. Together with the menhir, they create a historical contrast: here, a thousands-of-years-old stone stands in its original place; there, scant remains recall a medieval castle. The interior of Benzingerode Church is partially accessible by wheelchair. Some door thresholds and small level changes must be negotiated.
