Preserved four-sided farmsteads, a war memorial made of rubble stone and a Romanesque baptismal font give Badeborn a tangible cultural and historical character. To the west of the village, the Sewecken Hills add a landscape perspective: from one of the Quedlinburg field watchtowers, the panoramic view stretches across the eastern Harz foothills to the Brocken and Aschersleben.

Four-Sided Farmsteads and Historical Traces in Badeborn

Some typical central German four-sided farmsteads have been preserved in Badeborn. Their rectangular courtyards are surrounded by residential and agricultural buildings. What defines them is not just a single building, but the arrangement of the buildings around the courtyard. Here and there, dovecotes or pigeon towers have also been preserved within these farmsteads; they are called “Dubenspieler.” The village’s architecture is therefore visible on two scales: in the layout of entire farmsteads and in the individual pigeon houses.

On Ruhmberg, a war memorial built of rubble stone commemorates those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. St. Viti Church in Badeborn contains a well-preserved Romanesque baptismal font. The two monuments mark different historical themes: the memorial recalls the war, while the baptismal font represents Romanesque ecclesiastical art.

Panoramic Views and Local Cultural Life

One of the Quedlinburg field watchtowers is located on the Sewecken Hills west of Badeborn. From there, the panoramic view stretches across the eastern Harz foothills to the Brocken and Aschersleben. This offers a different focus from the village’s buildings and places of remembrance: here, the expansive view takes center stage.

Language is also part of local cultural life. At the Heimatverein mit Herz Badeborn e.V. local history association, people speak Low German on the last Friday of every month. If this date matters for your plans, check the association’s schedule in advance, as the published timetable may change.

Ballenstedt: Castle, Collections and Landscape

In the wider destination of Ballenstedt, the ensemble featuring the Residenzschloss is a landmark and a major attraction for visitors. Ballenstedt Castle is a Baroque, three-wing complex, largely dating from the first half of the 18th century and incorporating parts of the former monastery complex from the 11th and 12th centuries. The former monastery church contains the burial place of Margrave Albert the Bear (c. 1100–1170) and his wife Sophie. The palace theatre is an early Neoclassical theatre building, constructed as a court theatre in 1788. Ballenstedt Castle also displays a stone donor statue of Uta of Ballenstedt, created by the Naumburg Master.

The north wing of the castle houses the Ballenstedt Castle Film Museum, with a cinema and film history collection and exhibits spanning more than 100 years of film history. The museum includes a cinema with 53 original movie seats. Also in the north wing, the permanent exhibition “The Anhalt Harz Forest Through the Ages” explores the history of forestry and hunting in the Anhalt Harz Forest. In the south wing, the exhibition “Courtly Living” uses seven rooms to show the living conditions and lifestyle of the Ascanian family shortly before and after 1900.

Ballenstedt’s landscape attractions also have their own character. The 29-hectare palace park on the western edge of the town is an 18th- and 19th-century landscape park with a valuable collection of old trees. It is part of the “Garden Dreams – Historical Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network and offers visitors peace and relaxation. Ballenstedt is also located in the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz – Braunschweiger Land – Ostfalen. The RW1 circular hiking trail runs around Ballenstedt in 14 stages; information boards accompany it at 14 notable points in and around the town. The “Ballenstedt View” lookout is along this trail on an old industrial spoil heap and offers a view of the townscape. On Hoymer Straße, the Jewish cemetery is a site of cultural and historical significance, commemorating the Jewish way of life wiped out by the Nazis during the Third Reich.
