History and Culture

The town hall, formerly a school building, displays a copy of the document from 1190 associated with Freirachdorf. The present-day church was built in 1851/52. It stands on the site of a chapel built in the 16th century before the Reformation and was consecrated on 10 August 1852. The local church fair takes place on the first Sunday after 10 August.

Quarrying at Freirachdorf’s Kreuzberg uncovered a prehistoric mammoth tusk, which is now kept in the Hachenburg local history museum. An inscription on a gravestone dating from 1669 for Schultheiß Johan Humrich has been preserved in the wall below the church, on the road to Roßbach. Historically, Freirachdorf lay on a route that led from the Rhine via Dierdorf, Marienhausen, Mündersbach and Höchstenbach to Hachenburg. Quartzite extraction began after discoveries in the late 19th century and continued for almost 100 years; the reclaimed quarry site was returned to the municipality in the early 1980s. The smaller of the surviving church bells is said to have been cast in 1474/75 by Tilmann, the Hachenburg bell founder.

Village Life

At the center of Freirachdorf is Freigrafenplatz, with a playground, a large lawn and a bus turning area. Village festivals such as the local church fair and May celebration take place there. Amateur performances of “Schinderhannes” and “Balzar von Flammersfeld” were staged on the open-air stage at the festival grounds “Unter den alten Eichen”; the site is known as Schinderhannes-Platz.

Getting Around

Freirachdorf is connected by road via the A3 motorway and the B8 and B413 federal highways; Selters, Dierdorf and Hachenburg are nearby. In the Westerwald, circular cycling routes run along rivers, through valleys and to historic sights; they are signposted for both experienced cyclists and recreational riders.
