Nußdorf brings together medieval church art, memories of the Peasants’ War and a half-timbered house with a museum, walking routes, views and sound art. The village’s history is reflected in several places and in different forms: in the church building, at a monument, along a walking route and in the Peasants’ War House. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on historical themes, scenic views or artistic experiences.

The church and monument tell a story

The Protestant Church of St. John dates back to 1280 and features an early Gothic altar and medieval murals. A Roman four-god stone depicting Jupiter, Hercules, Minerva and Juno is built into the outside of its northeast corner. This brings medieval furnishings and a Roman monument together in the same building. The approximately 2-meter-high bronze monument to the Peasants’ War at the corner of Kirchstraße and Walsheimer Straße commemorates the start of the Palatinate Peasants’ War in Nußdorf in 1525. The church and the monument offer different ways to explore the past: architectural history and remembrance of a specific historical event.

The Peasants’ War House and its museums

The Peasants’ War House was built as a residence around 1500 and reconstructed in the half-timbered style in 1671/1672 on its historic foundations. Its museum floor houses the Pfarrer-Lehmann-Stube, the Peasants’ War Museum and the Nußdorf Village Museum. The exhibits range from a room named after a clergyman to the history of the Peasants’ War and the history of the village. Guided tours can be booked if you would like to explore these topics in greater depth.

Two walking routes, two different focuses

The historic village walk in Nußdorf follows a circular route with explanatory panels and focuses on the village’s history. The “Around Nußdorf” route leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Odenwald, Kraichgau and Black Forest. The difference to consider when choosing is the focus: village history along a walking route or scenic views from the viewpoint.

Sound art, open-air exhibitions and wine

Along the Landau-Nußdorf Wine Experience Trail, permanently installed sound sculptures invite visitors to play them. Seasonal open-air exhibitions by various artists are also held there. The trail thus offers a different cultural experience from the church, monument and museum: sound and changing artworks are the focus here.
