Hitdorf combines a waterside landscape, harbor history and varied trails to create a destination with many different sides. Hitdorfer See, the Rhine, the ferry to Cologne-Langel and the marina give the town its distinctive character. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Hitdorf can therefore plan their stay in very different ways: with walks and nature experiences, with culture and local history, or with active hours around the lake and harbor.

Between Hitdorfer See, the Rhine and the harbor

Hitdorfer See was created as a groundwater lake as a result of gravel extraction. Between 1997 and 2000, it was transformed into a swimming lake and local recreation area. Stand-up paddling is permitted on the lake. In addition, the “Hitdorfer Seen” running route has existed since 2007. These different options make the lake an interesting focal point for planning the day, without every outing having to follow the same pattern.

The Hitdorf harbor is also worth exploring on its own. It has been a marina with two yacht clubs since 1975, while its history dates back to the Middle Ages. The harbor is home to a crane café. You can walk along the peninsula between Hitdorf harbor and the Rhine. In the expanded harbor area in Hitdorfer Laach, a fitness station on Fährstraße, a boules court, a reflection trail and an outdoor chessboard with views of the Rhine have also been installed. There are also four soccer goals, a volleyball set, spectator benches and a new sky swing. This gives families various opportunities for shared active and more relaxing hours.

Those who enjoy walking can include the Hitdorf Reflection Trail in their plans. Since September 2020, it has led from the mouth of the Wupper in Rheindorf to the ferry to Hitdorf and includes five stations for pausing and reflection. Nearby, the Wupper estuary ship bridge can be reached on foot or by bicycle. It connects Hitdorf and Rheindorf with Neuland-Park, the Dhünnaue and Leverkusen city center.

A Harbor Town with a Remarkable History

Hitdorf also offers specific discoveries for travelers interested in culture. Haus Dorff is a listed historic building. The “Türmchen am Werth” local history museum presents many changing exhibitions about the Rhine as a living environment. The property of the Caspers and Neess families on Rheingasse also recalls the town’s history; it was built in 1666.

A prominent sacred building is St. Stephanus. The church is a neo-Romanesque brick basilica with a twin-tower façade, transept and semicircular apse. Its interior contains original neo-Gothic furnishings. This means a stay in Hitdorf can also be complemented by architectural and historical themes without having to give up a focus on nature and water.

The Right Base for Your Stay

When choosing a holiday apartment in Hitdorf, you can consider which aspect should shape your stay: the lake with its recreational opportunities, the harbor with its history and crane café, or the trails toward the mouth of the Wupper, Rheindorf and Leverkusen. The available destinations can be combined into various day plans, so you do not have to commit to just one type of holiday.

For current orientation, the condition of the Rhine ferry is also relevant. It connects the Leverkusen district of Hitdorf with Cologne-Langel. Due to low water levels, ferry service has been suspended since July 26 until further notice. Therefore, do not currently plan to use this connection as a crossing. Even when planning your own days, Hitdorf still offers numerous themes: water, activity, harbor atmosphere, the Rhine landscape and the history of the town.
