Höxter combines the Weser with a town shaped by half-timbered houses and Corvey’s cultural heritage. Corvey: Carolingian heritage and music

The Carolingian westwork and Civitas Corvey stand on the banks of the Weser, on the edge of Höxter. The westwork is the only surviving building from the Carolingian period. Partially excavated archaeological remains of the original imperial abbey complex have also been preserved. For the 2024 season, Corvey opened the newly designed permanent exhibition “The Millennium of the Monks.” Media stations and precious exhibits bring the monks’ Golden Age to life.

Corvey’s Princely Library houses around 75,000 volumes in 15 rooms. Its bookcases date from the late Neoclassical and Biedermeier periods. Visitors interested in book collections and historic interiors will find a different way to explore Corvey’s history here than in the exhibition. Music is also part of the site’s cultural life: since 1954, the Corvey Music Weeks have brought renowned ensembles and soloists from Germany and abroad to the Imperial Hall and Corvey Abbey Church every May and June.

Half-timbered houses and museums in Höxter

Magnificent Weser Renaissance half-timbered buildings continue to shape the townscape. The Museum in the Hüttesches Haus is a historic building from this period, located in a building dating from 1565 in Höxter’s town center. The museum has a professionally curated collection of more than 15,000 objects from the past 140 years. The Forum Jacob Pins, meanwhile, is devoted to Jacob Pins in its permanent exhibition. On display are paintings, woodcuts and his tools; a film tells the story of his life. The two venues thus offer different focuses: one a historic building and extensive collection, the other an exploration of an artist’s life and work.

Weser routes and active discoveries

Corvey lies directly on the Weser Cycle Route and the EuroVelo Route R1 between Höxter and Holzminden. The Weser Cycle Route to Höxter is continuously rideable and signposted on both banks. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can plan a historic walking tour of Höxter; it is 4.51 km long. With its main path, riverside path and high-level path, the Weser promenade offers different types of routes between the old town and Corvey.

The Huxarium Garden Park Höxter links the historic half-timbered town with the World Heritage site in Corvey. At the foot of the Carolingian westwork lies the Remter Garden, with roses, perennials, and vegetables and medicinal plants. With three large playgrounds and a marble run, Huxarium Garden Park is a family day-out destination. In the Archaeological Park, augmented reality on a smartphone or borrowed tablet brings the Market Church, the stone Weser Bridge and medieval scenes to life. During live excavations, visitors can use trowels to uncover hidden history.
