Olsberg: Kneipp Experiences and Nature
Accommodation in Olsberg
Olsberg combines Kneipp experiences with hiking and a distinctive natural setting: the Bruchhauser Steine near Olsberg-Bruchhausen are a nature reserve, an FFH site and a bird sanctuary. If you like to combine exercise and relaxation on holiday, you’ll find a range of themes to shape your day around—from the 40-kilometre Kneipp WanderWeg to brine and Kneipp treatments at the AquaOlsberg Sauerland thermal spa. When choosing a holiday apartment in Olsberg, you can consider which of these experiences you would like to make the focus of your trip.
Protected Rocks and History
In April 2017, the Bruchhauser Steine became the first National Natural Monument in North Rhine-Westphalia. A visitor centre with guided tours and several themed trails provide access to the protected rock formation. This lets you experience the natural setting on a guided tour or themed trail. Between the Bruchhauser Steine, there is also a prehistoric hillfort and place of worship dating from around 500 BC. Nature and history enthusiasts will therefore find different reasons to explore the same area.
The Eisenberg adds another distinctive feature: it is one of the 43 Sauerland Seelenorte (Soul Places) in the Sauerland hiking villages. In the 18th century, four adits were excavated on the southern slope of Briloner Eisenberg near Olsberg; the Philippstollen is one of them. For visitors interested in the history of mining, this site adds a historical dimension to the natural and cultural attractions of the area.
Kneipp Experiences on Foot
The Kneipp WanderWeg Olsberg is a 40-kilometre “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality trail. Six natural Kneipp barefoot-walking pools lie along the route. It starts at the Rote Brücke, a distinctive railway bridge above the Gierskopp district on Roter Weg. The trail’s length and barefoot-walking pools give your hike a clearly defined theme; take the 40-kilometre distance into account when planning.
Another option is the Wohlfühlroute (Wellbeing Route) of the Kneipp ErlebnisPark. It follows the Kneipp AktivWeg and the Ruhr and Gierskopp rivers to the Kneipp herb garden. The Kneipp ErlebnisPark has ten Kneipp RastOrte, where visitors can experience the five Kneipp elements with all their senses. If this kind of outing appeals to you, you can make the RastOrte and the route to the herb garden the focus of your visit.
Water, Exercise and Rose Gardens
The AquaOlsberg Sauerland thermal spa combines brine and Kneipp treatments with sports and leisure facilities. These include a 25-metre sports pool with water heated to 28°C. The spa therefore brings treatments and sports together in one place. The historic Kneipp-Park Dr. Grüne has a Kneipp facility integrated into a pond, a barefoot path and relaxation islands. Kurpark Dr. Grüne also has foot and arm basins for Kneipp water treatments, a pond and a fountain.
Another kind of outing takes you to Assinghausen: the Rose Village is home to more than 200 varieties of roses, and four rose trails lead through the village. Its rose-themed attractions offer something different alongside hiking, Kneipp experiences and mining. During your stay in Olsberg, you can decide whether you would especially like to explore the trails, Kneipp experiences, history or roses.
