Gleidorf can be explored through several distinct themes: the GL3 circular hiking trail, cycling routes, churches from different periods and the town’s older history. This gives visitors a range of ways to enjoy a stay that combines hiking, cycling and cultural discoveries.

Hiking and Cycling

The regional GL3 circular hiking trail starts and ends at the church in Gleidorf. It is 4.7 kilometres long, and takes about 1.5 hours to walk. The route first climbs gently towards Bad Fredeburg, then descends gently back to Gleidorf. The trail is marked with the GL3 hiking symbol. Its length and approximate duration give you a clear framework when planning a day hike.

Parking is available at the church. The starting point can also be reached via the “Unterdorf” bus stop, served by bus routes S90, 463, R69 and S40. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable for the relevant route in advance.

The Sauerland Cycle Ring also passes through Gleidorf, running close to both the Protestant and Catholic churches. The Bauernland cycle route joins the Sauerland Cycle Ring, which passes through Gleidorf on its way to Schmallenberg. The “Wilde 13” playground, with a climbing frame, swings and slides, is also right by the Sauerland Cycle Ring. When planning your day, you can therefore keep both a local cycling route and a playground on the ring in mind.

Churches and Local History

The Peace Chapel was built in 1858 by brothers Franz and Anton Lingemann in honour of the Virgin Mary. The Protestant Church of the Resurrection dates from 1873. Since 1984, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Gleidorf has been an example of contemporary church architecture. Visitors to the Herz-Jesu-Kirche can select texts and songs on an interactive screen; the lighting changes colour to match. The Gleidorf Culture Church opened in the former Protestant Church of the Resurrection.

The Heidenstraße is part of the area’s older history. Gleidorf was a transit area for pilgrims, merchants and mercenaries, who used this ancient road to cross the Sauerland. The crossroads of the Gleier and the Lenne is considered the geographical heart of Gleidorf. These connections complement the history of the churches with the town’s former role in regional travel and its geographical setting.

More themes in the wider destination of Schmallenberg

The wider destination of Schmallenberg also offers its own excursion and cultural themes. Schmallenberg’s old town has a uniform Neoclassical architectural character and many restored half-timbered houses. The 84-kilometre Sauerland Cycle Ring connects Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt and follows former railway lines.

A family adventure trail in Schmallenberg, about three kilometres long, has 13 stops exploring forests, animals, wood and birds. The Forest Worker and Forester Trail in Schmallenberg-Latrop is 4.5 kilometres long and has 17 stops covering forest ecology and the use of wood. The two trails differ in length, number of stops and subject matter. At the Forest Workers’ Museum in Schmallenberg-Latrop, you can see historical tools, pictures of earlier forest and village life, historical forestry records and information on the development of the chainsaw. A historical town tour explores Schmallenberg’s history and introduces local characters such as the Floigenkasper and the Breybalg. Check current dates and booking options for the tour in advance.
