Neu Sallenthin: Lakes, moraine slopes and views
Accommodation in Neu Sallenthin
Lake scenery and the character of the town
Neu Sallenthin lies on glacial moraine slopes that descend as far as Großer Krebssee. The town is immediately surrounded by Gothensee, Kleiner Krebssee and Großer Krebssee. The lakes and slopes give the choice of location a specific landscape setting. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can decide whether you would like to focus your days on the view from the tower, paths through the Usedom Switzerland or the town’s history. These different interests lead to different priorities when planning your trip, without limiting Neu Sallenthin to just one type of outing.
Views across Usedom Switzerland
The 40-metre-high Sieben-Seen-Blick observation tower stands just beyond Neu Sallenthin, at the edge of a field. It is also situated between Bansin Dorf and Neu Sallenthin. From there, you can enjoy views across the so-called Usedom Switzerland with its seven lakes. The tower is a clear highlight of the landscape if you would like to experience the surroundings from an elevated vantage point. When planning your trip, you can treat the view as a distinct feature alongside the lakes and the town’s history.
Hiking, cycling and different kinds of scenery
You can explore Usedom Switzerland on hikes and bike rides; the Sieben-Seen-Blick observation tower is a recommended place to take a break. A guided cycling tour is called “Around Schmollensee – Sieben-Seen-Blick Tour” and leads to the Sieben-Seen-Blick in Neu Sallenthin. This gives you two different ways to plan: a tour with the observation tower as a possible rest stop, and a specifically named guided route.
A circular trail runs through woodland and meadows around the Kleiner Krebssee nature reserve. This trail offers a different kind of scenery from the observation tower: here, the route takes you through woods and meadows, while there, you can enjoy views across the so-called Usedom Switzerland. The Usedom Lakes Route also passes along Gothensee, Krebssee, Schmollensee and Achterwasser. From the observation tower in Sallenthin, you can glimpse Gothensee, Krebssee, Schmollensee, Achterwasser, as well as the lagoon, Kachliner See and the Baltic Sea. The cycling route and the viewpoint each offer their own way to experience the surrounding waters.
Local history and literature
Neu Sallenthin was founded under a decree issued by the Royal Prussian Government in Stettin in February 1818. Hans Werner Richter was born in Neu Sallenthin on 12 November 1908. He was a German writer and the initiator of “Group 47”. The town’s founding and its literary history are thus two separate themes: the decree marks the town’s beginnings, while Richter connects Neu Sallenthin with the history of Group 47.
A different perspective on Heringsdorf
In the wider travel destination of Heringsdorf, the pier adds another historical highlight. It was named Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge in 1891 and extended in 1902/03 with the addition of the so-called Odin Bridge. Villa Irmgard in Heringsdorf houses a local history museum and a memorial to the Russian writer Maxim Gorky. These Heringsdorf themes provide a distinct focus alongside Neu Sallenthin’s lakes, trails and historical connections.
