Schmatzin combines a route through the village with architectural and manor-house heritage from Schmatzin and nearby Schlatkow. Route 3 – North of the Peene
Route 3 – North of the Peene is about 34 kilometres long and runs from Klein Bünzow via Schlatkow, Schmatzin, Ranzin, Gribow, Owstin, Lüssow, Stolpe and Quilow, before returning to Klein Bünzow. With a detour, the route is about 40 kilometres long. Schmatzin is explicitly on the route. This lets you choose between the shorter main route and a longer option with a detour. Local history in Schmatzin
Plaques on many houses in Schmatzin commemorate Hermann Runge, the builder and, from 1890, owner of the “Schmatzin Manor Estate”. From the 1890s onwards, farmhouses in the village were built in a uniform style. The history of the Runge family can also be seen in the manor park, where their graves and memorial stones erected by villagers are located. The manor and its history are thus reflected in plaques, houses and memorials.
Church and architecture in Schlatkow
The church in Schlatkow, which belongs to the municipality of Schmatzin, dates from the 13th or 14th century. A freestanding wooden bell tower stands beside the church. The late Gothic east gable has been restored. The church’s features include murals, a Baroque altar, a pulpit and a baptismal angel. Here, different architectural and art-historical features come together: the church’s date, its restored east gable and its Baroque furnishings.
Manor estate and historical events
The historic Schlatkow manor estate includes the manor house and two half-timbered houses built in 1768. The manor house’s main building burned down in the 19th century; a new building in the late Neoclassical style was built in 1870. The partly renovated manor house contains an information centre on the historical development of Swedish Pomerania around 1800.
Events from different periods are also part of Schlatkow’s history. On 18 April 1807, Swedish and French generals signed an armistice agreement there. From 1934 to 1945, the Pomeranian Milking School, where milkers were trained, was located on the manor estate.
