Diedrichshagen: Cliff Coast, Natural Beach and Thalasso Trails
Accommodation in Diedrichshagen
Dense coastal woodland, a steep cliff edge and a natural beach with colourful pebbles give Diedrichshagen a distinctive coastal profile. If you like to divide your holiday between the beach and paths through the landscape, you’ll find different sides of the Baltic coast here.
Cliff Coast, Beach and Protected Nature
Diedrichshagen Beach is part of the Stoltera nature reserve. Behind dense coastal woodland, the cliff edge drops almost vertically up to 20 metres to the untamed natural beach. The beach can be reached on foot via a small ravine and is known for its unspoilt character and the colourful pebbles along the water’s edge.
The “Diedrichshäger Land” landscape conservation area covers around 353 hectares. It lies within the cadastral districts of Diedrichshagen (sections 1 to 4), Warnemünde (section 1) and Groß Klein (section 1). The disused sand pits west and east of the Diedrichshagen landfill are also part of the landscape: they are important habitats for numerous rare and endangered plants and animals.
Hiking Between the Surf Zone and Coastal Woodland
Thalasso Health Trail 2, “By the Baltic Beach and Through the Seaside Resort of Diedrichshagen,” is a 4.7-kilometre circular hike. After about 1.5 kilometres, the trail leads up a flight of steps into the coastal woodland of the Stoltera nature reserve. This specific circular route is easy to distinguish from the wider choice of signposted trails: from Diedrichshagen to Markgrafenheide, there are ten Thalasso health trails that pass through the surf zone or the adjoining coastal woodlands.
You can reach the start and finish of Thalasso Health Trail 2 on bus routes 36 or 37 towards the seaside resort of Diedrichshagen, getting off at the “Rostock-Warnemünde Strand” stop. The stop is close to the hiking route. Check the latest connections before travelling.
Riding Lessons and Farm Shop
Blohm Riding Stables in Diedrichshagen offers bookable riding lessons. It’s best to check availability before you arrive.
The farm shop sells fresh eggs, homemade jam and liverwurst, fresh soup hens and rabbits, as well as fresh game from wild boar and roe deer. It also offers wild boar ham, potatoes and onions grown on the farm, and homemade egg liqueur. The selection may vary; if you’re interested, ask which products are currently available.
A State-Recognised Seaside Resort
Diedrichshagen continues to hold the designation “State-Recognised Seaside Resort.” Its successful renewal was confirmed on 4 August at an event in Warnemünde. Along with the beach, coastal woodland and signposted hiking trails, the designation is another part of the town’s profile.
Rostock as the Wider Travel Destination
Rostock has a history spanning more than 800 years and is one of the Baltic’s historic Hanseatic cities. A walking tour of Rostock’s historic centre takes in University Square, the Monastery of the Holy Cross and Kröpeliner Straße, as well as New Market Square and St Mary’s Church. Along the way, you’ll discover architecture, urban development and Hanseatic traditions.
Two hundred ships take part in Hanse Sail Rostock, alongside cruise ships, ferries and naval vessels. The number of participating ships may vary from one edition to another. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can first decide what you want to focus on: natural beach, coastal woodland and Thalasso trails in Diedrichshagen, or city history and Hanseatic tradition in the wider destination of Rostock.
