Kowalz brings together distinctive traces of local history, a listed landscaped park and attractions that can also be explored by bike. A full-mile obelisk on the old B 110, the manor house and the former sugar beet railway line reveal different sides of the village. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kowalz, you can tailor your stay to your interests: architectural and cultural history, landscape or active days on a cycling route.

Local history between the manor house and the road

At the junction of the old B 110 in Kowalz stands a milestone in the form of a full-mile obelisk, part of the former road layout in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Rostock district’s list of protected monuments, dated 14 May 2024, records the milestone at this location. It also lists the main building of the former machine tractor station at Hauptstraße 24 as a protected monument.

Kowalz Manor House was originally built as a half-timbered building, probably in the early 18th century. The writer Margarete von Oertzen, née von Plüskow, was born at the manor house in 1854. Its architectural history and her biography offer two different points of connection to the area’s cultural history.

Landscaped park and architectural history

Kowalz’s landscaped park is a protected monument. Its defining features include a magnificent lime-tree avenue and a small pond. These landscape features add another facet to the village alongside its historic buildings and road markers.

The village church in Thelkow offers a contrast to the manor house in terms of both period and architecture. The fieldstone building dates from the mid-13th century and was built between approximately 1260 and 1280 from fieldstone and, in part, brick. Its richly articulated south portal is worth seeing. Comparing the buildings brings their different construction periods and materials into view.

An archaeological site is also among the notable features described here: a destroyed megalithic tomb lies in a field south of Kowalz, between Kowalz and Nustrow. A single tree serves as a landmark. The tomb adds a different type of historic site to the architectural and park history.

The sugar beet railway line and cycling tours

The former sugar beet railway line passes the spot where the switch to the former Kowalz loading point was located. One section of the line has been converted into a cycle path. Here, a current cycle route meets a specific point in the history of the former railway line.

From Kowalz, you can continue your cycling tour along the old sugar beet railway route and through Sophienhof to Vilz. The “Megalithic Tombs and Slavic Hillforts” cycling tour passes through Kowalz. If you plan one of these tours, check the current route and conditions in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Kowalz, your preferred type of holiday can be a good starting point: would you like to focus on architectural history and landscape, or make a cycling tour the centrepiece of your day? You can weigh up these different interests as you plan your trip and choose a place that suits your plans.
