Preetz: Cycling Route, Manor House and Park Traces

Route 3 “Kranichland” passes through Oldendorf, Preetz and Schmedshagen, making the area a destination for a cycling trip. In Preetz and the municipality it belongs to, you’ll also find historic manor houses, traces of parks and distinctive trees. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether the cycling route or the history of the manor houses is the main draw for you.

Cycling through the villages

Route 3 “Kranichland” is about 39 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. If you’re planning to travel with children, you can consider whether a moderately difficult route of around 39 kilometres suits your plans.

The route also offers a variety of surfaces: it follows the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, paved village roads and country roads, as well as surfaced and unsurfaced cycle paths. So, if you choose this tour, you can expect several types of surface along the way. “Kranichland” is the name of the route; Preetz Manor House is named as a specific landmark along it.

A cycle path alongside the road leads to Preetz. In the village, Dorfstraße leads to Preetz Manor House after about 200 metres. These details provide clear directions for arriving by bike. When deciding where to stay, you can also consider whether the route itself or the municipality’s historic sites are more important to you.

Manor park and traces of history

Preetz Manor Park contains an early German motte dating from around 1300. It offers a glimpse into the area’s distant past. Notable trees there include a tulip tree and three large plane trees. If you enjoy looking out for individual details while exploring, you’ll find distinctive trees here alongside the history of the place.

In the northern part of the park, two graves from 1856 and 1886 commemorate members of the von Bohlen family. The former stable block is part of the Preetz Manor House complex.

Krönnevitz, a village within the municipality of Preetz, also has a Neoclassical manor house. It was built in the mid-19th century. The manor house had an extensive park, remnants of which have survived. This is a different historical trace from Preetz Manor Park: in Krönnevitz, the surviving park remnants are part of the record of the former grounds.

In Oldendorf, also a village within the municipality of Preetz, the renovated manor house dates from the 18th century and was remodelled around 1900. A manor house has been preserved in Schmedshagen, which is also a village within the municipality. The different histories of the villages and their buildings are easy to distinguish: Oldendorf is associated with the century in which its manor house was built and its later remodelling; Schmedshagen with the preservation of its manor house; and Krönnevitz with the Neoclassical style, the construction date and the park remnants.
