Lake Island and Waterbirds

The area around Lake Torgelow is a protected landscape, particularly to protect waterbirds. An island around 150 to 200 years old lies in the northern part of the lake. Cormorants have settled there since 1972; the island is also a breeding site for mallards, gadwalls and other duck species. The birdlife shapes the character of the lakeside landscape.

The extensive landscape park at Torgelow Castle is also shaped primarily by protected waterbirds. The surrounding landscape was incorporated into its design. The Heistersteine and Castle History

The Heistersteine megalithic tomb lies in the Seeblänken woodland near Torgelow am See. The stones were erected between 3000 and 1800 BCE. The site served as a communal burial place for a clan. The history associated with the town therefore reaches far beyond its more recent buildings. On an outing with children, you could talk about communal burials and the long span of time between the erection of the stones and the present day.

Torgelow Castle represents a different historical period: it was built to plans by Otto March and inaugurated in 1904. Its landscape park connects the castle with the surrounding countryside and also relates to the local waterbird population. The Heistersteine and the castle therefore represent very different chapters in the town's history—a prehistoric megalithic tomb and a castle from the early 20th century.

Cycling Routes and Swimming Spot

A cycling route through the Mecklenburg Lake District passes through Carlsruh to Torgelow am See and, in the town, to the castle on the western shore of Lake Torgelow. Cyclists are allowed to cross the castle grounds. This permission is useful when planning a tour if you would like to include the castle in your cycling route. A separate 30 km cycling loop also circles Lake Torgelow. These two options offer different starting points: a route leading to the castle and a loop centered on the lake.

A small, secluded swimming spot is located on the shore outside the castle grounds. If you would rather make a cycling tour the focus of your day, you can take the described loop around the lake; if you are interested in the swimming spot, you have another specific place on the shore in mind. Historic Bread Oven and Village Festivals

The Historic Bread Oven stands on Backofenstraße and was built at a historic site. Materials from the demolition of the former brickworks were used in its construction; they are around 200 years old. This approximate age refers to the building material, not to the oven itself. Bread is baked in the oven for village festivals. It is therefore part of not only the town's history but also a local tradition centered on bread at festive gatherings.
