Manor House and Historical Character

The castle-like manor house in Sponholz was built between 1741 and 1745 by master builder Christoph Julius Löwe. It is a Baroque stucco building with a gabled roof. Its construction period, builder, and architectural form give the village a specific historical point of reference: the building can be placed in a historical period and described architecturally. In 1785, Sponholz itself became a domain in connection with an exchange of the estate for the Staven domain. This event adds another historical layer to the architectural history. At about one kilometre long, the Os is one of the smallest eskers in the Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape Geopark. The Osauge, an amphitheatre-like depression, lies in its northern section. This landscape therefore includes both the esker and a clearly defined feature in its northern part.

In addition to trees and shrubs, numerous dry grassland species have become established on the dam-like deposits of sand left during the last Ice Age. Regular maintenance and sheep grazing preserve these species. There is also an important restriction to bear in mind when planning your outings: there are no public paths in the Rühlower Os nature reserve. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. Observing animals and experiencing the trail through the senses offer a different regional focus from the architectural history and rural traditions of the municipality of Sponholz.

The Neustrelitz town harbour offers further regional opportunities: from there, waterway travellers can explore Müritz National Park and the Strelitz Small Lakes region via the Upper Havel Waterway.
