In Datzetal, striking traces of history meet paths through the landscape: a Slavic rampart in Pleetz Manor Park tells of the early Slavic period, while churches and manor houses bring different centuries to life. There are also walking and cycling routes with specific starting points near Salow. When planning your stay, you can choose between historic sites, a circuit by the water and longer routes.
Castles, Manor Houses and Churches
The Pleetz rampart dates from the 8th or 9th century and is located in what is now the manor park. The former castle in Pleetz also has a long history: it was first mentioned in 1366 and was a knight’s estate in the mid-14th century; today it is a manor house. The hereditary office of Land Marshal of the Lordship of Stargard was also associated with the Pleetz estate. For almost 450 years, until the end of the monarchy, a member of the Hahn family held this office.
Another historical trace leads to Salow. The fieldstone church dates from 1308 and is the oldest building in the municipality today. Sadelkow Manor House was built in the first half of the 18th century and remodelled in the early 20th century. Roga has a church built in the early 14th century. These places offer different points of interest if, during your stay, you are interested in religious buildings, manor history or the region’s earlier history.
At Roga Manor, it is also worth looking at the individual surviving features: the landscaped park and the steward’s house, built in 1890, remain from the estate. Roga Manor House is privately owned. In Salow, the former manor house now has a different role: it houses the village centre, with a community centre, youth club, restaurant, pottery workshop and local history room.
Water and Paths around Salow
The Datze runs through the municipality for a total of 9.7 kilometres. According to the cadastral maps, 3.3 kilometres of it run through Sadelkow/Bassow, 3.5 kilometres through Roga, 0.4 kilometres through Pleetz and 2.5 kilometres through Salow. This breakdown gives a clear overview of how the Datze runs through the different parts of the municipality.
The Salow granary is a named starting point for a walk or cycle ride. From there, the route passes Klosterkoppel and continues to Schwarzer See. The granary is also the meeting point and starting point for the walk; parking for cars and bicycles is available there. This makes the tour easy to plan if you want to start your outing from a fixed point.
The Poetensteig runs alongside the pond in Salow Manor Park. Its route has been in place again since 1991 and has been resurfaced. Zieglersee lies in the middle of a field on a walk from Salow into the Salow Forest in the direction of Beseritz. It can only be reached on foot across the field. Bear this limitation in mind when choosing your route; the lake should not be confused with the cycle route described from the granary.
The different sites offer different points of interest: the rampart and manor houses offer a glimpse into history, the churches add medieval buildings to this picture, and the paths near Salow combine your stay with outdoor activity.
