Zehna: Nature Watching, Village Church and Crafts
Accommodation in Zehna
Zehna brings together a variety of interests: nature watching at Lake Breeser See, the village church’s rich furnishings and crafts in Groß Breesen. You can shape your stay around the discoveries that interest you most – from birdlife to historic details and handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces.
Nature Watching at Lake Breeser See
In the municipality, visitors can observe nature from a viewing platform at the Breeser See nature reserve. The lake is the most important part of the nature reserve of the same name. Its extensive reed belt is of great ornithological importance, as highlighted in a 2019 environmental assessment. For nature enthusiasts, the special appeal lies in the habitat itself and its importance to birdlife. The viewing platform provides a specific vantage point for observations. Zehna Village Church: Architecture and Furnishings
The church brings together architectural details from different building phases. Its massive, nave-wide lower tower once served as part of a fortified church. At the east end, a slightly staggered group of three windows divides the façade; numerous plaster panels and a gable cross adorn the east gable. The north sacristy also dates from the church’s construction period and has a gable decorated with panels.
Later additions include a southern entrance porch made of brick and a slightly recessed, square tower section. It is now plastered and topped with a pointed brick pyramid roof. A bronze bell bearing a majuscule inscription adds to the architectural details. The wooden pulpit bears the year 1615 and the names of its donors, especially the Büter family.
The church’s interior furnishings can also be placed in their historical context. The wall and vault paintings date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The oldest furnishing is a granite baptismal font from the 13th century. The late Gothic carved altar from the 16th century shows the Madonna between four saints, including Saint Christopher, in the central shrine; the twelve apostles are depicted on the wings.
Two different dates are important when it comes to the organ: only the case remains of the small Baroque organ built in 1689. The actual instrument was built in 1919 by Paul Rother in Hamburg as Opus 170. The paired windows in the nave and choir contain stained glass from the Hamburg workshop of the Kuball brothers. The choir also contains a 1564 epitaph dedicated to Mathias Passow, who owned an estate in Zehna. The different dates make the church a point of interest for anyone who enjoys exploring architectural history and furnishings piece by piece.
The churchyard is laid out as a cemetery. Its entrance is on the east side, through a wrought-iron gate with brick pillars.
