Natural beach and Conventer Niederung

Börgerende’s natural beach stretches west to the Jemnitz sluice and east to the Ghost Forest of Nienhagen. The beach sections differ considerably: alongside wide sandy areas, there are narrower, stony sections. This variety offers a practical starting point for planning your day if you would like to experience different types of beach landscape. Börgerende-Rethwisch borders the Conventer Niederung nature reserve directly. Lake Conventer is also a useful landmark in this natural area: Seestraße runs around the edge of the nature reserve, beside the lake.

Exploring on foot or by bike

A popular walking trail leads east from Börgerende along the steep coast to the Ghost Forest in the Baltic Sea resort of Nienhagen. This route links the coastal landscape with a specific destination for a walk. Two circular cycling routes are described: one from Börgerende-Rethwisch to Nienhagen, and another from Börgerende via Bad Doberan to Heiligendamm. If you enjoy planning outings on foot, consider the coastal trail; for a bike ride, you can choose between the two routes mentioned. Fishing is possible in Börgerende-Rethwisch, and there is also a boat rental in the village.

Village church and local history

Rethwisch Village Church is an example of North German Brick Gothic. It is a three-aisled, three-bay stepped hall church. The central panel of the valuable winged altarpiece depicts a crucifixion scene from 1530. A Late Gothic triumphal cross is mounted on the north wall. Another notable feature is the richly decorated pulpit in the auricular and strapwork style, made of oak by a Rostock artist in 1666. The church thus brings together art-historical details from different periods, from the Late Gothic cross to the 17th-century pulpit.

The Börgerende-Rethwisch local history museum provides information about the community’s 700-year history, traditional local crafts and agriculture. Visitors can view historic machinery and farming objects in the adjoining open-air area. Guided tours and additional opening hours are available by arrangement. The Jemnitz sluice, which still exists today, lies near Börgerende. It was built in 1880/82, following the storm surge of 12–15 November 1872. One of the last GDR border guard watchtowers also stands on the Börgerende dyke.

A 12-hole mini-golf course adds to the choice of activities in the village. Mini golf is available from early May to mid-September. The Tourist Information Office for the Baltic Sea resort of Börgerende-Rethwisch provides information about cultural events and leisure activities, and sells cycling and hiking maps.
