The mill is a visible landmark, but it cannot be visited inside. The barrage, by contrast, shows how several functions come together in one facility: it includes a lock, weir and power station, as well as a fish ladder. These offer different points of interest for anyone interested in historic buildings or technical facilities. At the Ehmken Hoff cultural heritage site, the focus is on the restored farmhouses and their history. Their renewed protected status is part of their significance as cultural heritage today.

Things to do in the municipality

Beyond its townscape, the municipality of Dörverden offers a range of other attractions. In the district of Barme, Wolfcenter Dörverden provides information about wild wolves, which are once again spreading through Germany on their own. In Hülsen, the Hülsen cultural association offers tours of surviving remnants of the history of potash mining. Both attractions have a different focus from the mill and waterworks: one is about knowledge of nature, the other about the history of a defining economic activity.

In the wider Verden destination

The wider Verden destination offers additional nature and culture experiences. The “Dünengebiet und Halsetal bei Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve is characterised by complex, closely interwoven biotope structures where the northern slope of the Verden dunes meets the lowland of the Halse stream. There are designated hiking trails in the protected area. The Aller Cycle Route also runs through the district of Verden as a circular route between Verden and Rethem. Architecture and local history can also be seen in a variety of forms. Etelsen Castle was built in the historicist style; its façade has been preserved in its original form, while the halls, salons and corridors have been restored in the style of the period. At the reconstructed burial mound in Diensthop, visitors can look inside: a vertical cross-section divides the mound in half, with a huge oak tree coffin standing in front of it. In Barme, a mound surrounded by a ditch marks the spot where a medieval motte with a half-timbered tower once stood.

The Historic Sheepfold Quarter in Hülsen consists of ten stables, which are protected as a group of buildings. Two stables serve as exhibition spaces for old farming and craft equipment; the quarter can only be viewed from the outside. On baking days during the summer months, bread and butter cake are baked there using traditional methods. Visitors who are interested can also learn about the baking process and how the oven works. At the potash mining information centre in Hülsen, objects, tools, salt core samples, miners’ clothing, pictures, plans and graphics convey an impression of the area’s economic heyday and life at the time.

There is a separate seasonal schedule for crossing the Weser: From 15 March to 15 October, pedestrians and cyclists can use the Dörverden weir to cross the river. The crossing is via stairs, with side channels for pushing bicycles. Check current conditions before setting out.
