History

A Cistercian convent moved to Himmelpforten in 1255; at that time, the settlement was known as Eulsete.

The Himmelpforten convent was known in Latin as Porta Coeli. The name means “Heaven’s Gate” and contributed to the place names Himmelpoorten and Himmelpforten.

The former monastery church was also used as a parish church.
