Lebenstedt combines Salzgitter Lake with city history and church architecture. Water sports, disc golf, a city park and historic sites offer different perspectives on the area. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to start with a simple question: should your trip focus mainly on the water, on culture and remembrance, or on both? The Salzgitter destination also offers other themes you can include in your plans.

Water and activities at Salzgitter Lake

Salzgitter Lake lies on the western edge of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and covers 75 hectares. As a water sports area, it is associated with sailing, windsurfing, rowing and canoeing. If you would like to combine your trip with activities on the water, the lake offers a clear focus for your plans.

A permanently installed 12-hole disc golf course is located on an island in Salzgitter Lake in Lebenstedt. The pirate playground is on the eastern shore. The ice rink at Salzgitter Lake has an ice surface of 1,800 square metres. These different places and activities offer more than one option for planning your leisure time: water activities, disc golf, the playground and ice sports each provide a distinct theme for your trip.

City history, churches and the city park

The monument to the city’s history stands in the centre of Lebenstedt. It was created by Braunschweig sculptor Professor Jürgen Weber and unveiled to the public in 1995. The monument commemorates the development of an industrial area and city under National Socialism, as well as the forced labour carried out at the Reichswerke. It thus connects the city’s history with remembrance of the people who were forced to work there.

St. Andrew’s Church is the oldest church in the district. Its shell was already complete in August 1858; it was consecrated on 28 August 1859. The Protestant St. John’s Church has a different construction history: its foundation stone was laid on 7 October 1954, and it was consecrated on 2 September 1956. The church is near the city park, at the end of Am Saldergraben street.

The city park is in the centre of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt. It has around 900 trees, including many exotic species, as well as a city park pond. The urban green space and pond add another dimension to the area’s themes of water and activity at Salzgitter Lake.

Places of remembrance

Around 4,000 victims from more than 15 nations are buried at the Jammertal memorial cemetery. Visitors can locate the graves using a coordinate system and a cemetery map. This guidance makes a visit an opportunity for thoughtful engagement with a place of remembrance; the approximate number of victims and their many countries of origin also convey the scale of the site.

More to discover in the Salzgitter destination

There are cultural attractions beyond Lebenstedt in the Salzgitter destination, too. The Municipal Museum at Salder Castle presents exhibitions across 5,000 square metres in a Renaissance castle built in 1608 and its outbuildings. The exhibitions cover the region’s history, from geological history and prehistory and early history through the Middle Ages to the early modern period of the 20th century. The grounds include a 2,000-square-metre Ice Age Garden, which illustrates the importance of nature and climate to human cultural development in an Ice Age setting. It is accessible during the museum’s opening hours; check the current opening hours before your visit.

For those interested in hiking, the Salzgitter destination offers more to explore: the two Geopfade (geo-trails) are circular hiking routes, 6.5 to 8 kilometres long, running from Lichtenberg Castle or Hamberg through the beech forest in the nature conservation area. Nature watching is another focus at Heerter Lake, within the city limits of Salzgitter. It is a European reserve and a refuge for rare species; visitors can observe migrating cranes and northern waterbirds, among other species. The species you can see vary by season.

When searching for a holiday apartment, you can decide in advance what kind of trip you want: should the focus be on water sports and Lebenstedt’s city history, or would you also like to include museums, hiking trails and nature watching in the Salzgitter destination? This way, your interests give your search a clear direction.
