Reeßum on the Northern Route of the Wümme Cycle Route

The northern route of the Wümme Cycle Route runs from Bremen-Vegesack to Wilsede, or in the opposite direction, passing through Reeßum. Cyclists can therefore incorporate the village directly into their plans for this route. The entire Wümme Cycle Route is a circular route approximately 250 kilometres long, following the Wümme more or less closely. The northern route is approximately 125 kilometres long, and the southern route approximately 135 kilometres. Cross-connections divide the routes into individual sections, which are also suitable for day trips and families. This makes it possible to distinguish Reeßum’s specific connection to the northern route from the longer circular route: depending on how you plan your cycling days, you can focus on an individual section or the regional route as a whole.

Herb Region and Circular Tour

Reeßum is part of the Wiesteniederung Herb Region, a joint initiative by the municipalities of Horstedt, Reeßum, Sottrum, Mulmshorn, Gyhum, Bötersen, Hassendorf, Hellwege and Ahausen in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). The project is supported by the Kräuterregion Wiesteniederung e. V. association. Agriculture, retail and businesses, restaurants, tourism providers, and landscape and nature conservation organisations work together to create attractive herb-related activities. The herb theme is therefore regional in scope and brings together different sectors. One route in this themed area is the Herb Route. After travelling through Taaken and Reeßum, the watermill in Stuckenborstel is the final highlight of the circular tour. It stands beside a mill pond fed by the Wieste. The Wieste is largely in a natural state and provides a habitat for numerous fish species. These include the rare, European-protected spined loach, as well as river and brook lampreys. Together, the circular tour, mill, mill pond and waterway offer a concrete impression of the different themes associated with the Herb Region.

Hiking and Culture in the Wider Rotenburg Travel Region

The wider Rotenburg travel region also offers hiking trails. The 24 NORDPFADE trails in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) are circular walks between 5 and 32 kilometres long. One example is the NORDPFAD Ostetal, which leads through a river landscape of dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. The route lengths provide a concrete point of comparison with the cycling routes, while the Ostetal landscape offers a distinct focus. This allows you to weigh up different ways of exploring the area on your trip without treating cycling and hiking routes as equivalent.

Culture is also part of the wider Rotenburg travel region. In Bremervörde, the Bachmann Museum is housed in the city’s oldest building, the last surviving structure of Bremervörde Castle. The exhibition is currently closed for renovation work. This historic site is therefore a cultural theme to consider when planning your trip to the region; be sure to take its current closure status into account.
