Discover Peine: Churches, Parks and History
Accommodation in Peine
In Peine, neo-Gothic church art, everyday and industrial history, parks and pilgrimage routes come together. Excursion destinations range from the historic town centre to places such as Lengede, Vechelde and Bodenstedt. You can tailor your stay to what interests you most: architecture, places of remembrance, green spaces or routes through the region.
Churches, History and Exhibitions
The Protestant Church of St. Jakobi in Peine was built in 1899 in the neo-Gothic style. Its original colourful wall and ceiling paintings have been restored. The Catholic Church of Zu den Heiligen Engeln is also neo-Gothic: it was built between 1866 and 1869 to plans by Haase, a building councillor from Hanover. The church houses a striking triumphal cross dating from the 13th century. Here, you can encounter 19th-century architecture alongside a much older sacred work of art.
The Kleiner Petersdom, also known as the Markuskirche, stands in Hohenhameln-Equord. The church is a smaller, true-to-scale replica of St. Peter’s Basilica and was built on the Equord estate from 1697 onwards. Visits are possible only by prior telephone appointment. ZeitRäume Bodenstedt offers a different historical perspective: the museum displays preserved original interiors from various stylistic periods in the main house of a three-sided farmstead built in 1878. Audio presentations and film projections bring developments from the imperial era through to the 1960s to life.
The Peine District Museum tells the history and stories of the town and region. Covering 1,000 m², it focuses on everyday life in different periods and on the lives and work of craftspeople, industrial workers, townspeople and farmers; it also explores local features of the Peine area. In Lengede, the “Wunder von Lengede” museum takes a different focus: a pre-booked guided tour first documents everyday life in mining and the “Wunder von Lengede”. The visit then continues to the memorial to the mine disaster.
Parks, Forest and Pilgrimage Routes
Burgpark Peine offers an overview of the excavations and Peine’s old town. Information boards explain the excavated objects and the history of Peine Castle. The former palace park has been preserved at Schlosspark Vechelde, where visitors can stroll past Baroque sculptures and rose beds. The park at Rittergut Alvesse covers around 3.2 hectares. Its landscape-style design features broad lawns, wooded areas along the edges and an interesting collection of trees.
In Zweidorfer Holz, the forest adventure trail offers a family outing with a variety of stations. These include forest sounds, wood piles, a barefoot sensory path and a forest bed, as well as animal long-jump, tree history and a tree telephone. The stations focus on different aspects of the forest and give the outing a clear theme.
Pilgrimage routes also feature among the available activities. The Via Romea, also called the Romweg, passes through Rietze, a village in Edemissen in the district of Peine; Rietze is therefore part of Abbot Albert of Stade’s pilgrimage route. The Braunschweig Way of St. James runs through the mining park, past ponds and open-cast mines, into the old village of Lengede and onward to Woltwiesche. The two routes can be explored separately, with their own named places and stops.
Plan Your Visits and Find a Holiday Apartment
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which visits matter most to you. You can use Peine itself as your search location if the Peine churches, Burgpark or the district museum are your main focus. This lets you base your choice on the places you actually want to visit.
Another place to visit is the Rausch Chocolate House in Peine, where premium chocolates are sold at the factory outlet. Check the current opening hours before travelling. Whether you want your stay to centre on Peine’s town history, its parks and forest stations, or its pilgrimage routes, this gives you a good basis for choosing the right search location.
