Apen lies on the border between the parkland of Ammerland and the East Frisian fenland. The freshwater mudflat is located on the Aper Tief, the only freshwater mudflat in northwestern Germany.
Apen’s landscape comprises winding waterways, straight canals and green dykes. The Aper Tief is connected to the North Sea via the waterways Jümme, Leda and Ems, meaning that tidal changes can be noticed in Apen. Two retention areas of the Aper Tief form a nature reserve.
The freshwater mudflat was created in 2005 by relocating the southern dyke to create a retention area for possible flooding. It can be explored on a walk along the dyke. The German Fen Route is approximately 173 kilometres long and follows cycle paths through a natural fenland landscape.
The Tange Landscape Window can be reached via hiking trails, a signposted hiking route and quiet cycle paths. The historic cycling route through Apen is a 48-kilometre discovery tour. At twelve historic sites, information panels tell stories.
The Ammerland Route is described as an approximately 170-kilometre cycling tour divided into three stages. The region around Apen is described as suitable for cycling, canoeing, fishing and hiking. In Augustfehn, the Paddle and Pedal Station allows visitors to exchange a canoe for a bicycle for the return journey.
St. Nikolai in Apen dates from the 13th century. The church’s pulpit was created around 1625 by the sculptor Ludwig Münstermann; St. Nikolai also has a freestanding bell tower dating from the 15th century.
The Vreschen-Bokel Chapel was built on a terp in 1456. For a long time, it was one of only two places of worship in Apen, alongside St. Nikolai. A wooden mill had stood at the site of the Hengstforder Mill since 1742; it was replaced by a stone mill in the late 19th century.
The listed heating house and listed ironworks tower have been preserved on the Augustfehn ironworks site. The reconstruction of the Plaggenhütte Nordloh commemorates Oma Puls, who lived in a similar hut from 1823 to 1916.
The Ham Museum is located in Ammerland’s oldest ham smokehouse. According to the museum, its owner has smoked ham according to the old tradition for nine generations. The Männeken Theatre has operated as a permanent venue in Apen since 1993.
