Culture and history
Echte is stop 15 on Kalefeld’s signposted “Churches and Chapels” cycle loop. The entire loop is around 41 kilometres long, information boards are located at its stops, and visits to churches or chapels are possible by prior arrangement. The church in Echte is also a stop on this route; the approach follows the Aue and leads to the church and a protected lime tree at the church entrance.
Echte was located on important medieval east–west and north–south trade and communication routes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the route running through Echte carried freight between the Frankfurt and Brunswick trade fairs.
The wider Kalefeld area includes ecclesiastical heritage, the Weißenwasser Church as an old baptistery, the Tongrube Willershausen natural monument with more than 50,000 fossils from 500 species, and the battlefield at Harzhorn, where Germanic forces fought Roman troops.
