Discover Burgstemmen: Poppenburg, Park and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Burgstemmen
Burgstemmen combines an extraordinary history of castles with sacred buildings, historic memorial sites and walking paths. The Poppenburg is particularly prominent: its history dates back more than 1,000 years and leads straight into the town’s medieval past. This cultural profile is complemented by Andrea-Hilse Park on the southern edge of the town. Anyone planning a trip to Burgstemmen can therefore combine historical discoveries with peaceful walks.
The Poppenburg as the focal point of the town’s history
The remains of the castle wall with its gate have been preserved from the early medieval Poppenburg castle complex. The residential wing from the 16th century, together with the mighty palas, forms a right-angled complex. The two lower floors of the palas were converted into the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in 1785. The carved high altar of the castle church, created around 1690, is also part of this unusual historical context.
The location of the Poppenburg explains its former importance. In the Middle Ages, it stood on a hill above the crossing of the River Leine and controlled traffic on the old Hellweg. This important trade route led from the Rhineland to central Germany. In connection with the castle, a crossing of the Leine in the form of a bridge or ferry and an associated customs station are also mentioned. Both were considered an important transport and trading hub on the Hildesheim–Paderborn route.
Ecclesiastical art and historic traces
St. Joseph is located in the combined lower floors of the palas. The high altar was acquired in 1773, but had already been created around 1690 and came from the dissolved Hildesheim Jesuit college. At the Poppenburg, you therefore encounter several historical periods: the medieval castle complex, the residential wing from the 16th century, its conversion into a church in 1785 and an altar with a history of its own.
There are also remarkable testimonies to the past outside the castle. The Protestant St. Michaelis Church was built around 1200 in the Romanesque style. In the Burgstemmen churchyard, individual historic graves have been preserved alongside old trees; a war cemetery is located at the northern edge. An obelisk dating from 1882 also stands on Domänenweg. It is made of finely worked sandstone covered with bas-reliefs and topped with a wrought-iron cross. These places give a walk through Burgstemmen a variety of historical points of interest.
Andrea-Hilse Park and walking paths
Andrea-Hilse Park is located on the southern edge of Burgstemmen. The Hilse family acquired the site and created it as a landscape park. The park covers approximately 15 hectares and is situated on a former sand-mining site. As a result, in addition to its historical motifs, the townscape has its own distinctive character shaped by human design.
There are walking paths in and around Burgstemmen. If you would like to alternate between culture and exercise, you can combine the historic sites with time in the landscape park or a walk. For families with different interests, this selection offers the opportunity not to devote the day exclusively to a single theme, but to incorporate history, ecclesiastical art, memorial sites and the landscape into their own plans.
