Düthe: Lock, cycle routes and local history
Accommodation in Düthe
Düthe brings together waterways, cycling and an unusual local history. Two cycle routes lead to Düthe Lock; the village was also the seat of a Gogericht (a medieval regional court). When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: cycle routes and the lock, or the village’s historical side.
Waterways, island and lock
The canal cut through the Ems at the end of the 19th century turned the area around the districts of Fresenburg and Düthe into an island. To the east, it is connected only by three bridges and a footbridge. This island history explicitly concerns both districts and is an important part of the area’s geographical context.
Düthe Lock has an old and a new chamber. It is 165 metres long and has an average lift of 2.2 metres. If you are interested in water engineering, the chambers, length and lift provide specific points of reference for understanding the lock beyond its role as a cycling destination.
Two cycle routes with Düthe as their destination
“Grain and Water” is a 58-kilometre circular route focused on mills and locks in the northern Ems Valley. Cyclists follow the Dortmund-Ems Canal or the Ems through Fresenburg to Düthe Lock. The route description therefore combines a circular tour with a specific destination near Düthe.
Another option is “Horse and Bike”: it runs from Niederlangen through Sustrum to Düthe Lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. When choosing, you can compare the 58-kilometre circular route focused on mills and locks with this route from Niederlangen through Sustrum to the lock. These are different routes, which you can weigh up according to your interests.
Court history and the marksmen’s festival
Düthe was the seat of a Gogericht, which served an area roughly the size of a large parish. The “Theiort” is considered a possible site of the court; this field name is still used locally for the area around the Huntemann and Schulte-Greve farmsteads. The tentative identification of the Theiort makes it a distinct historical point of interest alongside Düthe’s documented role as a seat of the court.
The marksmen’s festival in Düthe-Fresenburg is a traditional two-day event. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check in advance when the festival takes place.
Fresenburg: history and angling
Fresenburg has its own historical story, too. Around 1220, a castle stood there to secure the borders against the Count of Tecklenburg and collect the Ems toll. In 1422, the castle chapel was moved from the castle—which had already long been destroyed and abandoned—to its present location in the village of Fresenburg. After being used for a time as a school and meeting room, the chapel is once again used for worship today.
The Ems and the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Fresenburg are suitable for angling. Together with the history of the castle and chapel, this provides a distinct area of interest to consider in your travel planning alongside the cycle routes and lock in Düthe.
When searching for a holiday apartment, you can keep the topics separate: in Düthe, the lock, cycle routes and history of the Gogericht are key points of reference; the castle, chapel and angling relate to Fresenburg. Consider which of these different interests should have the greatest influence on your choice of location.
