The Syke District Museum presents everyday life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present day while also preserving the region’s cultural heritage from the past 300 years. At the Gessel Gold Hoard Forum, an exhibition traces history from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The Gessel Gold Hoard comprises 117 gold objects from the 14th century BC; in the hands-on laboratory, visitors can try out archaeological research methods for themselves at six laboratory stations.
The Barrien watermill is also part of the city’s cultural character: it is one of the few remaining mills with natural motive power within the Syke urban area. The garden of Syke Vorwerk features changing and permanent sculptures and works of art. Syke Vorwerk presents four to six changing solo or group exhibitions each year. The outdoor grounds can be visited independently of the opening hours.
Buses 102 and 153 run from Syke railway station to the district museum. The Gessel Gold Hoard Forum is barrier-free via the main entrance and has two accessible parking spaces. There is a self-service café there for a coffee break.
The Syke Cycling Circuit is a more than 40-kilometre loop through Syke’s districts. Hiking trails include the Hachepadd, which begins at the district museum, follows the Hache and continues through the Hache Valley. The Gold Hoard Trail starts at the district museum and the Gessel Gold Hoard Forum and crosses the hilly Geest landscape near the original discovery site of the gold treasure.
Syke Wolf Gorge is a natural amphitheatre in the forest. The Forest-Way-Sign-Art Trail uses wooden objects and elements to transform the forest into an artistic space. During the summer months, Syke Wolf Gorge is used for children’s events and cultural events. From Hohen Berg, the view extends across the Geest landscape towards Bremen.
