Landscape and Village Character

In Steinau, drainage ditches along the roads shape the character of the village and landscape. The southern part of Steinau is characterised by the Hadelner Canal, adjacent dikes and towpaths, as well as moorland and woodland areas to the south and southwest. The settlement centre is located around the church in Lauentheil and Glind; there is also extensive development along the roadsides.

Nature

The Steinau–Alte Aue project area lies southwest of Steinau between Lauentheil and Süderwesterseite. Steinau–Alte Aue is a breeding area for meadow birds of state-wide and local importance. The Sietland is a traditional breeding area for meadow birds such as lapwings, redshanks, curlews and snipes.

Species-rich marsh grassland and traditional ditch structures have been restored in Steinau–Norderende.

Culture

St. John the Baptist in Steinau is a half-timbered church built in 1835. It preserves a wooden baptismal font with a pewter bowl dating from 1733. The church was recorded as a Sendkirche in 1245 and described as one of the older churches in the Sietland.

The organ at St. John the Baptist was built by Georg Wilhelm in 1839 and restored by Hillebrand in 1991; it is a late example of North German organ building. The Kleine Kulturkreis Steinau organises cabaret, theatre and readings. Small art exhibitions are occasionally held at the Holzschuhmacherhaus.

Local Highlights

The Steinau Brewery houses a brewing system where beer is produced, fermented, bottled and cooled. The local beer is produced under the name Alte Aue, including the Pils and Weizen varieties. A snack vending machine is located at the front of the brewery and is accessible to everyone, including passing cyclists. The Steinau Brewery also has an accessible access path.

Cycle Paths and Events

Stinstedter See Polder can be circumnavigated on a cycle and walking path. Information boards and two observation towers are part of the route; from the towers, visitors can observe geese, cranes, swans and lapwings. The Steinau Brewery project was linked to the renewal of a cycle and walking path in the village centre in order to support cycle tourism in rural areas.

Steinau hosts an annual Whitsun festival known as Steinauer Frühtanz.
