Lüdingworth combines expansive marshland with a local history that unfolds through St. Jacobi Church, a prehistoric Dorfwurth and the Bullenmühle. Meadows and pastures shape the landscape; the easy cycling circuit “De Hoben” also runs through the village and continues past several stops before returning to Cuxhaven. This offers different ways to shape your trip: you can explore Lüdingworth’s history or consider the longer circuit as part of an active stay.

Church, Dorfwurth and remembrance

St. Jacobi Church was built on a Wurth at the end of the 12th century. The church, also known as Lüdingworth’s “farmers’ cathedral,” is a prominent historical landmark in the village. Since 2 April 2026, the Lüdingworth parish has offered regular guided tours inside and around the church on Thursdays from 11 a.m. A visit lasts more than an hour. If you plan to join a tour, check the parish’s schedule before setting out.

Lüdingworth’s prehistoric Dorfwurth remains undisturbed to this day and is classified as an archaeological monument. The historical perspective thus stretches from the prehistoric Dorfwurth to the construction of the church at the end of the 12th century. There is also a memorial sculpture to Carsten Niebuhr in front of St. Jacobi Church. Frijo Müller-Belecke created it in 2004. Its dedication to an individual adds a distinct note of remembrance alongside the history of buildings and settlement.

Marshland and cycling circuit

Marshland with expansive meadows and pastures characterizes Lüdingworth. If you would like to include a cycling circuit in your stay, you can follow the easy “De Hoben” route: it is 39.14 kilometers long and runs from Cuxhaven through Altenbruch, Lüdingworth, Franzenburg, Oxstedt and Berensch, returning to Cuxhaven. Along the circuit, Lüdingworth lies between Altenbruch and Franzenburg; the route places the village within a longer ride through several places. These are two different ways to plan your trip: you can focus on the village’s history or consider the circuit as a larger activity. Check current route conditions before setting out.

The Bullenmühle “Betty”

The Bullenmühle, now called “Betty,” is part of the village’s more recent history. It was decommissioned in 1989 and restored in 1994 after falling into disrepair threatened. Its decommissioning and restoration form a different strand of history from the prehistoric Dorfwurth and the church. Together with the memorial sculpture, they create a timeline that reaches from early traces of settlement to a monument from 2004.

Culture in the wider destination of Cuxhaven

In the wider destination of Cuxhaven, the Joachim Ringelnatz Museum displays paintings, drawings, volumes of poetry, prose works, photographs, documents and letters relating to Ringelnatz’s life and work. This combination of artworks, texts and personal documents offers a different cultural focus from Lüdingworth’s local history.

Ritzebüttel Castle is also in the wider destination of Cuxhaven. The late-medieval castle was given a Baroque extension at the front in the 18th century. Following extensive restoration, it was opened to the public as a civic castle in 1996; today it is a cultural venue for concerts, readings and exhibitions. Architectural history and cultural events are two aspects you can take into account when exploring Cuxhaven.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to ask which themes you want to shape your stay: Lüdingworth’s marshland and local history, or the museums and cultural venues in the wider destination of Cuxhaven.
