Villagescape and History
Bülkau was established around 1200 as a linear settlement by Dutch colonists and was first mentioned in official records in 1352.
Church and Music
St. John’s Church is a central landmark in Bülkau. It stands on a dwelling mound and was probably built as a Gothic fieldstone church during the Frisian colonization. In 1701, the nave was rebuilt on the old foundations as a simple brick hall; the medieval polygonal chancel was preserved. A free-standing square wooden tower stands west of the nave. The chancel contains a rood group dating from around 1515. Parts of the case of an Arp Schnitger organ have been preserved in the church. The furnishings also include a bronze baptismal font dating from around 1250 or the second half of the 13th century.
Bülkau’s brass band, singing circle, flute group, and guitar group regularly provide music together with the organ at church services and events. The parish organizes evening concerts in Bülkau.
Getting Around
Cycle paths along the L 144 and K 21 make it easier to explore Bülkau by bicycle. The Aue area is suitable for walking and exploring by bicycle. Canoe trips are possible on the Aue and the Hadelner Canal. The route between Bovenmoor and Stinstedt is also suitable for exploring by bicycle.
Landscape and Water
Bülkau borders the Balksee and Randmoore protected area and offers views of moorland and heathland. Bovenmoor borders this protected area directly. The protected area has a freely accessible observation tower with panoramic views over Balksee; white-tailed eagles can sometimes be seen from there.
Anglers with a fishing permit can fish at Balksee and on the Hadelner Canal. The Hadelner Canal connects Bülkau with Odisheim, Osterbruch, and Steinau. Public landing sites along the Hadelner Canal are available for canoeists and recreational boat users.
