Norden’s market square is home to St. Ludger’s Church, the largest medieval church in East Frisia. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Norden can then continue their search for accommodation.

Culture

The adjacent bell tower of St. Ludger’s Church houses a carillon that plays seasonally adapted songs four times a day. Preserved patrician houses around Norden’s historic market square reflect the town’s long history.

The Deichmühle exhibition explores the history and technology of milling, including water pumping. At the Frisiamühle, an exhibition is dedicated to the bakery and confectionery trades, while the Westgaster Mühle exhibition covers milling and traditional agriculture. The MKO Railway Museum displays historic vehicles and track construction equipment in its locomotive hall. Three historic windmills have also been restored in Norden.

Local character

Within the regional context of East Frisia, East Frisian tea culture was added to the German Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in December 2016. Norden’s tree-lined market square is home to a regional weekly market with traders from the surrounding area.

Getting around

In 2026, services on the historic coastal railway between Norden and Dornum are suspended until further notice due to ongoing maintenance work. The Frisian Route can be reached from Norden railway station by bus and train. The Frisian Route Rad up Pad is fully signposted and offers rest areas for cyclists.

In nearby Norddeich, the Seal Station National Park House raises orphaned seal pups; visitors can observe the care provided and the work involved in releasing them back into the wild. Also there, the Wadden Sea Window and the Sea Terrace provide access to the Wadden Sea and enable guided mudflat walks. Ferries run from Norddeich to Norderney and Juist; trains stop directly at the harbour next to the ferry terminal.
