Loppersum combines a distinctive terp settlement with impressive cultural history and varied trails. The typical terp settlement can be seen in the historic village centre. Other cultural highlights of Loppersum include the manor house, the Protestant Reformed church and the “Fortuna” grain mill. At the same time, the municipal area extends eastwards as far as the inland lake Hieve. This makes Loppersum an ideal destination for a trip combining historical features, landscapes and outdoor activities.

Fresenhus Manor and Historic Gardens

The manor house in Loppersum was built in 1859 on the site of Loppersum Castle. It was named “Fresenhus” after its owner. The well-preserved building is privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. This is important to bear in mind when planning your trip: the manor house is a destination for viewing architecture and exploring local history, not for touring the interior.

The surroundings of Fresenhus also tell stories of the past. The meadows of the former Schlingergarten surround the Fresenhus villa. In the 19th century, the lime-tree avenue in the garden was laid out as a philosophers’ walk. The tea house was also used there as a dovecote. These details give the place a special historical depth and make Loppersum interesting for anyone who wants to discover not only the landscape but also the village’s organically developed structures during their stay.

Church with Traces from Several Centuries

The Protestant Reformed church in the Loppersum district dates from the second half of the 19th century and replaced the older Gothic brick building. Inside the church is a private gallery belonging to the neighbouring castle lords. The historic furnishings also include tomb slabs from the 16th and 17th centuries. The bell tower holds three bells bearing the years 1411, 1743 and 1965. Anyone interested in church architecture, regional history and individual traces of the past will find several points of interest here rather than just a single building.

Water, Mill and Trails through the Surrounding Area

The “Fortuna” grain mill was built in 1886. It was reconstructed using parts of a water-powered drainage mill from Suurhusen. The connection to Suurhusen is also one of the regional links that emerge when exploring the surrounding area.

For active days, the free “Entdeckerpfad” smartphone discovery trail is a good option. The trail runs outdoors, consists of a navigable circular route and can be used at any time. If you would prefer to plan a hiking route through the countryside, you can include the Nünepad. This hiking trail leads from Osterhusen via Suurhusen to Loppersum along the Knockster Tief waterway. This allows you to combine different ways of exploring: a digitally guided circular route within Loppersum and a hike along the waterway.

Loppersum as a Base for Your Trip

Loppersum is located six kilometres north of Emden on the B 210 towards Aurich and belongs to the municipality of Hinte. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, the key consideration is therefore which priorities you want to set. Those interested in culture can include the manor house, church and mill in their plans. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, the Entdeckerpfad, the Nünepad and the landscape around Hieve complement your stay. Accommodation in Loppersum is therefore particularly suitable for a trip where you see the destination not merely as a place to stay overnight, but as a starting point for your own discoveries.
