Nature and Landscape

The landscape around Großheide comprises raised bog settlements, long canals, and meadows, and has the broad, open character typical of East Frisia. To the north, Großheide borders the Wadden Sea nature reserve. The Ewiges Meer, Großes Moor bei Aurich nature reserve extends into Großheide; the Ewiges Meer raised bog area lies south of Großheide.

Those who choose Großheide as a travel destination may perhaps want to rent a holiday apartment there.

Cycle Paths and Routes

The Ewiges Meer Route runs through Großheide. It is a 32-kilometre circular cycle tour through the raised bog region. Großheide also has a well-developed network of cycle paths suitable for cycle tourists.

Culture and History

The Forest and Moor Museum is housed in a former village school building on the edge of the raised bog, next to the Berumerfehn Forest. It explains the raised bog landscape, its flora and fauna, and its reclamation. By arrangement, the museum offers guided tours and educational programmes for school classes and groups.

The Berumerfehn Canal was constructed from 1794 onwards to transport peat northwards by waterway. The Schoofsche Mühle is a 20.5-metre-high gallery Dutch windmill that was relocated from Carolinensiel to Berumerfehn.

The Kompaniehaus was built in 1830 as a recreation house for members of the Norder Fehn Society; the building is listed and contains a hotel restaurant.

Water and Paths

The historic peat boat Selika offers excursions on the Mittelwieke. Pedal boats can be rented next to the Selika landing stage.
