Rebgeshain: Village History, Nature and Experiences
Accommodation in Rebgeshain
Rebgeshain combines an illustrative village history with the landscape of the Vogelsberg and special occasions in local community life. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Rebgeshain can therefore shape their stay according to different interests: There is plenty to discover around historic buildings and cultural monuments, while the local district and the designated MTB route offer their own nature and activity themes. Added to this are carnival traditions that, until 2025, had been part of the life of the district for decades.
Discovering Village History in Historic Buildings
Rebgeshain originated between the 8th and 12th centuries. The village name also refers to the region’s past: Its origin lies in the Hagen settlements of the region. This history is particularly tangible in the surviving farm and school buildings. The schoolhouse dates from 1813; in 1910, Rebgeshain had a one-class elementary school.
According to its inscription, a five-zone single farmhouse was built in 1769 by Johannes Fink, the progenitor of the Fink family of master builders from Lauterbach. In addition, a six-zone extended farmhouse has a residential section whose three eastern zones still date from the late 18th century. Details like these make a walk through Rebgeshain a journey through different phases of the village’s architecture and life.
One of the notable cultural monuments is the bakehouse at Brunnenweg 2. Its core dates from 1830 and combines a solid basalt and brick structure with a shingled half-timbered construction. The bakery’s equipment and an adjoining room where cakes could be sampled have been preserved. The bakehouse is listed as a cultural monument of Hesse and also recalls its original importance to village life.
The cemetery complex also offers several historical points of interest. These include a 19th-century enclosure made of basalt and a portal lined with linden trees, both of cultural and historical interest. The complex also includes a memorial erected after the First World War for soldiers and fallen servicemen from the village. A more recent feature is the cemetery hall, built in 1972 to a design by Walter Ruppel, which displays remarkable contemporary architecture.
Nature and MTB Experiences in the Vogelsberg
The Rebgeshain district belongs to the Hoher Vogelsberg FFH area. For an active day out, the 33.2-kilometre, moderately difficult MTB Route 7 Ulrichstein is a good option. The circular route runs through the Vulkanregion Vogelsberg Nature Park, passes through the Breungeshainer Heide nature reserve and goes by the Landgrafenborn spring.
On the route, mixed woodland alternates with a paved farm road. The route leads to Rebgeshain and then continues along the edge of the village towards Ulrichstein. The length and designated moderate difficulty are important points when planning your day. Those who choose a holiday apartment as a starting point for a bike ride can deliberately combine this route with their own ideas of nature and cultural experiences.
Carnival as Part of Village Culture
Carnival is also part of Rebgeshain’s community spirit. Until 2025, Rebgeshain Carnival had been held at the village community centre for 33 years. Until 2025, the Rebgeshain carnival troupe had taken part in the village’s carnival celebrations for 30 years. At a carnival event in the village community centre, the association community also opened a series of carnival events in the wider municipality of Ulrichstein.
If you are primarily planning an MTB tour, however, the route length of 33.2 kilometres should fit into your personal plans for the day. This keeps your choice of accommodation closely connected with the experiences you are actually seeking in Rebgeshain.
