Grebenau can be discovered in two very different ways: by following hiking trails through its districts and exploring traces of local history. For your holiday planning, the town combines outdoor activity with culture.

Hiking trails and local history

The Gründchen circular hiking trail passes through the municipal areas of all Grebenau’s districts; the Luther Trail runs from east to west through the town. When choosing a route by its geographical scope, you can therefore distinguish between one that covers all the district areas and one that follows an east–west direction.

Grebenau’s town hall is housed in the former Johanniter monastery. The Amtmannhaus recalls the time when Grebenau was a market town on the old trade route known as “die Kurzen Hessen.” The townscape thus brings together two different historical connections: the former monastery and Grebenau’s history as a market town.

A geological point of interest nearby is the Große Kuppe: this basalt column outcrop is 12 metres high and lies about one kilometre east of Grebenau-Reimenrod.

Another perspective on the Vogelsberg

The wider Vogelsberg destination offers a broader perspective on the landscape. The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic area. The Vogelsberg mountain hay meadows are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse. The geology and protected meadows give the region distinct nature-related themes.

At the Vulkaneum in Schotten, volcanism is explained in an engaging way. The multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg; visitors can experience the past firsthand at various experiment stations and interactive exhibits.

At Hoherodskopf in Schotten, the treetop path is 500 metres long and features suspension bridges. At the Hoherodskopf high ropes course, nature and adventure enthusiasts can climb from tree to tree under the guidance of trained staff. The two attractions offer different experiences: the path runs through the treetops, while climbing is the focus at the high ropes course.

The regional hiking routes also vary in length and scenery. The GipfelTour Schotten is a 14-kilometre route that crosses four summits in the Oberwald and passes through species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with ancient basalt formations. The Weitblicktour Ulrichstein is a moderately challenging 11.6-kilometre circular trail around Ulrichstein, passing through deciduous forests and a patchwork of small fields. At 11.6 kilometres, it is shorter than the GipfelTour Schotten. The Vulkanring Vogelsberg circular hiking trail covers 119 kilometres and links natural and cultural highlights around the ridge of the Hoher Vogelsberg.

In Ulrichstein, aquatic plants and circulation systems naturally clean the water in the natural bathing biotope. The Vogelsberggarten is also located on the Schlossberg: since 2001, centuries-old cultural heritage around the castle ruins has been maintained and cultivated using traditional farming methods. Visitors can discover 243 wild plant species in the garden.
