When choosing your holiday apartment, the kind of stay you are looking for is a good place to start: would you like to spend more time exploring local history and architecture, or plan longer outings in the countryside?

Churches and Architectural History in Züntersbach

Züntersbach is mentioned around 900 as a settlement in the Saalegau; by 1167, the village had its own church. Its religious heritage includes the Protestant Bergkirche and the Catholic St. Boniface Church, built in 1880. The two churches are also landmarks in the village: the Catholic church stands at the southern exit of Züntersbach, while the present-day Protestant church is on the eastern edge of the village, elevated on a spit of land.

St. Boniface Church houses a Late Gothic Madonna. Its creator is unknown and was probably a Franconian master. Alongside the church’s architectural history, this independent work of art is also a focus of the village’s history.

Another distinctive architectural feature is the historic cemetery wall. It was built from sandstone on a hillside around 1566. A tall round-arched portal was inserted into the wall in 1609. Pilasters with plinths frame the portal, and the arch surround has multiple profiles. The approximate construction date of the wall and the later portal mark two different points in history. Anyone interested in architectural forms will find a clear combination of materials, hillside setting and carefully designed framing here.

Hiking, Cycling and Nature

The rural landscape around Züntersbach offers plenty of room for long hikes and enjoyable cycling trips. Rhön Circular Trail 7 passes over Kühlschlag and offers a beautiful view of Züntersbach. Changes to the trail markers are noted as of April 2026; check the current signage before setting out.

Rhön Circular Trail 5 offers a different view of the village: in the area around Züntersbach, after the climb in Eckarts, it passes viewpoints overlooking the neighboring village. Both routes focus on the landscape, but the views described are different. There is also a place to stop for refreshments in Züntersbach on Rhön Circular Trail 7. If you plan to stop, check that it is currently open.

A single natural landmark adds another distinctive feature: the 300- to 400-year-old Läus Oak stands on Brückenauer Weg. A storm affected its former appearance; check its condition when visiting.

More Nature and Cultural Experiences in Sinntal

The wider travel destination of Sinntal has other distinct destinations to explore. The Sinnwiesen nature reserve stretches from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes the chess flower meadows. Flowering is seasonal and depends on the weather. The annual Chess Flower Festival is held in Sinntal-Altengronau at the end of April; free guided tours take visitors across the meadows. Dates and arrangements may vary, so it is a good idea to check the information for the relevant year.

For a longer hike, the nearly 14-kilometer Spessartfährte Quellwinkel Kinzig is another option in Sinntal. The circular trail runs from Sinntal-Sterbfritz to Sinntal-Weiperz and passes through two nature reserves. Around the source of the Kinzig, open landscapes alternate with wooded slopes; the ridges offer sweeping views towards the Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg. Numerous orchid species grow right beside the trail in the Stephanskuppe and Weiperzberg nature reserves.

For a different kind of day out, Altengronau Natural Swimming Pool offers a 680-square-meter water area, sandstone diving rocks, a slide hill, a water play area for children, a waterfall, a children’s playground and a table tennis table. Check seasonal opening times before traveling.
