The Niedermittlau Berkopp Circuit combines scenic forest-edge trails, dense woodland, the site of the former Centre of Europe and the old clay pits nature reserve. If you would like to bring together landscapes and a notable historical reference on a hike, this circuit brings these themes together.

For far-reaching views, the panoramic trail on Niedermittlau Heiligenkopf offers a different focus. From there, views stretch across Hasselroth and the Freigericht Bay as far as Frankfurt and the Taunus. While the Berkopp Circuit combines woodland and a protected area with the site of the former Centre of Europe, the panoramic trail focuses on the surrounding landscape.

Another natural area is the 11-hectare Hässeler Weiher nature reserve north of Neuenhaßlau. Its importance as a protected area stems from its diverse plant life and bird population. These two aspects define the area's protection and provide a distinct contrast to the woodland scenery of the Berkopp Circuit.

The approximately 14- to 16-kilometre European Cultural Route Hasselroth passes through Gondsroth, Neuenhaßlau and Niedermittlau and goes by their sights. You can start at the Hessian Youth Forest Centre or at the Edelweißhütte on Wingert. Allow about 14 to 16 kilometres for this cultural route. Check local route information for current conditions.

Village History at the Museum and Church

The Hasselroth local history museum opened in 1988 in the schoolhouse built in 1847 in Niedermittlau. It shows life and work in the three villages up to the end of the 1950s, offering a glimpse of everyday life in the past in Gondsroth, Neuenhaßlau and Niedermittlau.

The museum's themes include local diamond cutting and cigar production. A hand-operated fire engine dating from 1894 is a specific exhibit in the collection. Together, the themes range from local trades to a dated object from the history of the fire service.

The local history museum offers museum tours and additional guided tours of the town, particularly for kindergarten, school and youth groups. Tours can be combined with activities such as washing laundry as people did 100 years ago. Contact the museum directly to arrange the details.

The Niedermittlau St. Lawrence Church offers another way to explore local history. Its interior is simply designed, reflecting strict Reformed principles. Alongside the exhibits at the local history museum, the church interior also offers a way to understand the area's religious heritage through its design.
