Town History and Glass Design

The city wall makes it possible to experience the historic centre as a coherent area. The Immenhausen Glass Museum offers a different perspective on the town’s history. Its permanent exhibitions trace the history of glassware from Art Nouveau to the present day. Goblets, vases, bowls and other decorative and household glassware illustrate the development of glass design from 1890 to today. Alongside the historic town centre, the focus is therefore also on the design of everyday objects.

In the Horseshoe Tower, information panels tell the story of the town and its renovation. To gain access, you can collect a key from the town hall or the glass museum during their respective opening hours. Plan your visit around these times.

Choose an Eco Path by Theme and Length

Established in 2007, the Ahlberg-Mariendorf Eco Path of Cultural History is about 4.5 km long and explores more than 2,000 years of settlement history around Ahlberg. The Holzhausen-Reinhardswald Mining Eco Path focuses on something different: it leads to the former mining sites on Gahrenberg, Kleeberg and Osterberg and is about 17.2 km long in total. The routes therefore differ both in length and in the history they highlight.

The three sections of the Holzhausen-Reinhardswald Mining Eco Path can be explored on foot from the “Roter Stock” or “Bürgerhaus” car parks in Holzhausen. The routes pass through the landscape of the southern Reinhardswald, are easy to walk and have only gentle inclines. Before setting out, check the current conditions at the car parks and on the trails.

Your choice therefore mainly depends on the theme and route length: the area around Ahlberg explores settlement history over about 4.5 km; the mining path links three sections with former mining sites and is about 17.2 km long in total. The gentle inclines are a feature specified for the mining path, not both routes.

More Themes in the Wider Kassel Destination

There are more landscapes to discover in the wider Kassel destination. Reinhardswald Nature Park brings together centuries-old pollarded oaks, extensive beech and spruce forests, river valleys and natural stream landscapes. Another option is the “Hör‘ mal!” programme’s audio tours: there are 15 tours in the district of Kassel, following fixed routes with stops and viewpoints. They differ from the Eco Paths, whose local routes in Immenhausen explore specific themes such as settlement history and mining.
