Eschbach brings together a church with a long history, trails with different focuses and distinctive rock formations. The Historical Hiking Trail leads to 18 stops over about 7 km; the Eule Nature Trail is much shorter at around 3 km. The Eschbach Cliffs are another highlight on the Buchfinken Route. When planning, you can choose between local history, landscape and exercise.

Church and Local History

The Evangelical Church of St. Alban in Eschbach is listed as a cultural monument. A chapel on this site was first mentioned in 1388; the foundation stone for the present building was laid in 1843. Its furnishings also span different periods, including a 16th-century gravestone, a communion chalice dating from 1681 and an organ by Daniel Rassmann. The church is also a stop on the Historical Hiking Trail Eschbach im Taunus, so you can encounter local history both in the church building and along the trail.

Two Trails with Different Focuses

The Historical Hiking Trail Eschbach im Taunus links 18 stops with QR-linked information about local history and the landscape. Stops include the Evangelical Church, the Old School and the Old Waterworks, as well as the Saienstein and the Eschbach Cliffs. At about 7 km, the route offers a longer way to explore these varied themes; its approximate length and number of stops provide a clear guide for planning.

The Eule Eschbach Nature Trail is shorter, at about 3 km, and passes through fields, woodland and residential areas. It starts at a bus stop. In contrast to the Historical Hiking Trail, the focus here is on changing landscape types, while its 18 stops connect local history and landscape with specific places. The two routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in what you can focus on along the way.

The Eschbach Cliffs

The Eschbach Cliffs are among the highlights of the Buchfinken Route. In the wider destination of Usingen, they are described as 12-metre-high rock formations that form a striking contrast with the gently rolling landscape of the Taunus Nature Park and lie in the heart of the Usinger Land. The Buchstein Rock, also known as the Eschbach Cliffs, is a clearly visible destination for hikers and a popular climbing crag, with views over the Usinger Basin and the Taunus. Parking is available close to the cliffs; check the parking situation before your visit.

More Destinations in the Wider Destination of Usingen

The palace garden offers a different side of the wider destination of Usingen. Its surviving grounds are near the former Usingen Palace and Palace Square; their origins date back to the 17th century, to the time of Walrad (1635–1702), the first Prince of Nassau-Usingen. The upper part of Usingen Palace Garden, which is in use today, includes a fountain, a monument to Prince Walrad erected in 1905 and a war memorial. The palace garden also includes the adjacent rose garden and a nature playground in the upper section.

Various events take place in the palace garden in summer: a family festival during the Hessian summer holidays, a summer night festival and a rose garden festival. Dates may vary, so it is worth checking the schedule for your planned visit.

Museums and More

The Museum of Prehistory and Early History, in the cellar of the historic town hall, displays archaeological finds from the Usinger Land, from the Palaeolithic to the Germanic period. The exhibition is open every other Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m., from spring to autumn. Special guided tours for groups, including school classes, can be arranged by appointment outside regular opening hours; for individuals, this is only possible in exceptional cases. Check the opening hours before planning your visit.

The Usingen Town Museum is housed in the historic Kavaliershaus. It showcases famous figures from Usingen as well as historic household items and tools dating from the 17th century to around 1950. If you are more interested in exercise and swimming, the Usinger Taunusbad has a 25-metre sports pool, 1-metre and 3-metre diving boards or platforms, and starting blocks. Usingen is well connected via the A3 and A5 motorways and is linked to the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund rail network.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Eschbach, consider whether you want to focus mainly on the church and the different trails or also include the palace garden, museums and leisure attractions in the wider destination of Usingen.
